Many new songs are added each day to CTG. Not many listens to them however which is sad. What would be very beneficial for all of us is an Auto Download Function, ADF. It would work like this:
Each user can set which styles he prefer. He could then choose them to be downloaded automatically. No clicking on download links would be necessary. For example if I choose chiptunes and funk. All new funk and chiptunes that are submitted would be downloaded automatically to my harddrive.
There could be constraints also: 'Only download trance songs if the word 'repetetive' do not appear in the reviews.' The possibilities are endless.
Each day there would be a fresh collection of songs downloaded for you convenience and even if you don't like them all it will be an effiecent way to find the good ones.
Fire away!

Strange idea... Can't help the feeling you would be the only one to use it, and only for some (short) time.
A better option (imo): "New songs in your preferred genres", "... by chosen artists", by something. Ideas of this kid were already voiced I think.

I can't see anything strange with it. It's a matter of convenience. It would result in more downloads, more good songs discovered etc. You usually go after known artists. This is a perfect way of getting to know new artists in an effortless manner. Don't say you aren't lazy and want everything served without effort!

How do you imagine this autodownload function? In some way, you must have one CTG page open, and the download dialog/s would always pop up, unless you set your browser to automatically save the downloads without asking you "Open or Save?". I don't see any other option for automatic downloads.
What would be more wise is an individual page that you can configure in your artist tools, that notifies you if a new song was added to CTG with the criterias you specify. You could also get a PM and stuff. This would be wiser than an automatic downloader.
What if I don't enter the site in a week, and during that week 20 new songs were added that meet my criterias? Then twenty new download windows would popup.
What if my browser is configured to automatically open a MP3 in my player instead of just downloading it? I only see more problems than features.
What's so disturbing in clicking "download"?
Just my thoughts.

I prefer to put a little effort and have control over what I'm downloading.
Btw. no, I don't go by artist, at least not only. I try to be open to new artists when choosing tracks to download.

Well, the techical solution is perhaps the biggest issue. The funtion in itself is very attractive however. It should be able to be solved in a nice way, or?

What's the point in doing tedious tasks when you don't have to?
How come most ideas here at CTG are met with a negative attitude? At least those ideas I've put forward have been voted down. Why not look at the ideas on their own merits? Looking at the possible benefits? The reason I didn't get involved in CTG so much at the beginning was the constant refusal and ignorance to new ideas. They may have sucked all of them, yeah, I know, but my strong experience is that new ideas aren't interesting.
On topic again:
If there would be a way of making a script or function for you to get a playlist in winamp generated and playing of the new songs at ctg (by your request) by the click of an icon, wouldn't that be awesome!?
It's just like a nice agent function. For those who enjoy manual time wasting procedures there's still that option available.
(One of my first non diplomatic posts. Enjoy.)

Techical solution is not the problem at all... I am talking about the practical usage of the function.

Hey, I was not rejecting the idea because it comes from you, I just evaluated the idea itself and suggested a better implementation way instead of the initial suggestion.
I think it's good when users suggest new improvements for this site.

That would be streaming. It could be done, but you could also do the same right now with just a few clicks more.
Let's see the opinions of more people.

Technical solution could be a PC client, which now and then connects to the ctg server, which returns a list of new releases, release date/time, genre, and of course the download link. Then if there's any matches, the client attempts to download the mp3 from the direct link, and well, if it fails, the song is skipped.
To my ears, the server feature doesn't sound too hard to code: Each time someone submit a song, it's added to a list file (could be a simple .txt file) on the server which a PC client can read. That's simply all the server needs to do.
The PC client is of course a bit trickier, but doesn't sound harder to code than a simple download manager.
Actually, I don't know if the feature is particulary important, but I kind of like the idea, and it doesn't really seem too hard to create. I mean, if any of us regulars would like to create the PC client, I'm sure acecream or someone could make the new releases go into some list the PC client can read.
Fortunately, my music is much more interesting than my posts. |

A PC client could be a good solution. But then, users would start using the client instead of visiting ctgmusic.com itself.

Yeah, but I can not think of another way to have this feature. Not a good one at least. But of course it's not like we need this feature... (would be cool though)
