Hmm, Tori Amos and Norah Jones are usually pretty well mixed, i like when vocals are sad, mixed close like it's singing only to you inside your head :)

Sometimes I end up using something like 20-30 plugins & other effects to get vocal fit to my mix, usually 4->6 + external compressor, reberb and delay will to the trick...

Don't really do vocals myself, but I reckon you'd be best trying to keep things simple. You don't want to drown the vocals in too many effects. I think the answer is simple - you just need a decent singer/vocalist in the first place

For fitting the vocals into the mix, I reckon it's probably even more important just to tweak the EQ and levels of all the instrumental and drum parts, so that the vocals can fit over the top. That sounds much more sensible to me than altering the vocals to fit everything else.

Suppose it depends what you want though. If I wanted natural sounding vocals, then I'd do what I said above. If not, then you can do whatever you want really. Just experiment with plugins and effects and see what you can come up with!

Well, I'm singing myself so, well, I have descent voice. Let's leave it at that, shall we? :) Song coming up latest the middle of june! (Kick ass dance track!)
