As some of you already now, I'm currently in the workings of making a FREE Sound Library and during the noise floor testing in my studio some strange noise peaks and radio signal did appear. Please see the images of the spectrum analyzers of the 1 min noise test recordings here:
Aurell's Free Sound Library Noise Test
Any ideas of what might make that noise? How do you eliminiate radio signals induced by long wires?

I don't have time ATM to go through your website, so may have already planned this. Gear with balanced inputs and outputs coupled with good balanced cables would help. Otherwise, try shorter cables. Good luck! |

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'm not sure if the cables are balanced or not though. I'm gonna try using an earthed power outlet and see if that makes a significant difference. If you get time later I would value your input, Sonus.

Also, make sure your cables aren't broken anywhere, you can pick up a lot of noise and stuff from even a little tiny bit of open wire...

It also seems you have alot of devices that emit radio signals.
for instance your wireless router will not only route your traffic, but it will also enhance the radio transmissions that are currently in the air.
Your IR mouse will not do anything, as its not radio based but light based.
Your screen should be shielded to form any complications.
You should check to see if your computer is grounded to a grounded wall outlet. If its not, it will be producing alot more noise than you want. It can be so bad, that a modem connection can be jammed enough to be half the speed as that it should have.
Next would indeed be looking for cables that might be broken.
I would surelly do a measurement with all cables plugged off that are not required.
It might seem odd, but i had a cable in my TV tuner which was damaged. and even thou i had my tv tuner muted entirelly, i still got noise in my soundcard, as the cable somehow worked as an antenna, and the plugs received the signal, even very tiny.
If you can get a noise free environment with all the plugs out, then you're one step ahead. Also make sure your soundcard has a low noise floor. So its not generating this peak by itself (which bytheway can still occor if your pc is not grounded)

Thank you everyone! The cables aren't balanced and theirin lies the main problem according to the sound tests. Using Adobe Audition I've managed to filter out the noise but it still affects the quality of the signal a bit. I'll look into what balanced cables cost.

From my understanding, balanced cables won't do anything if the gear you're using has balanced ins and outs. I'm assuming your 2 mics have balanced outputs. Most mixers will have balanced inputs and outputs as well.
I guess it depends how you have your computer setup with the mixer, ie, do you have the output of your soundcard to the mixer, and the output of the mixer to your amp? Or do you have the output of the mixer going to the input of your soundcard, then the output of soundcard to amp?
Does your amp have balanced inputs? Does your soundcard have balanced inputs/outputs?
