I think all of you lost the main theme....
The converstation here is not "if the labels are good or not" but to talk about problems or how to sell your music throught the net.
If a track is a crap or an artist is really amateur, is not our subject here.
People who downloads music they can listen before buy an mp3 and if they don't like ,they don't pay. It's too easy to understand, I suppose.
From the other side, what is crap and amateur for me it's not nessecary and for others.
How many r'n'b tracks sounds silly to my ears, but their are selling millions????
So, lets discuss more realistic things like:
"What rules they have to start selling?"
"Are you sign a kind of contract?"
"How they pay you?"
"Which are the deal?"
"Which sites are cool and which is not?"
and this kind of stuff!

hmmz maybe ppl with an unrealistic self image think thy can make money with amatueristic music..
Unless you've been gaining lots of experience and knowledge in recording/mixing studios for the past few years.
To be honest, if an unsigned artist charges me money to listen to his mp3 I will be offended |
Offended? Why? Is signing the only way to get money for one's hard work?
Not that I would buy any of this music...
|
Yea, but how to check it is worth buying? Labels giving you sure the quality and skill is good...
|
I disagree. There is lots of bad music sold in shops, distributed by big labels. These recordings are often overlimited, easilly get overdriven when EQ-ing them on your hi-fi and not neccessarily the music is good anyway. Labels don't give a shit to the listener. They are for the musicians.
|
That doesn't make too much sense, DDspeed. If labels didn't give a shit about the listeners, how would they make money? Record labels are businesses with the aim of making a profit. They do this by releasing music that people want to listen to and that they will buy. As long as there's a market for band, a label will will release that band's music.
Of course there's loads of crap being released on big labels, but that's a matter of personal taste. Again, SOMEBODY out there likes that crap, and they constitute the market.
That said, if you make music that, as ansii said, people would be willing to pay a couple bucks to listen to, then people will buy it. Of course, marketing and promoting your music is extremely hard, but the Internet is a great means of distributing music, as we all know.
I guess my point is that (many) labels don't give a shit about the artist. They're only concerned with a return on their investment. If they think a band will sell, they'll invest in releasing that band's music. |
You misunderstood me. I said labels don't give a shit to the listeners .
I mean the labels won't make the music better. What labels do is promotion and distribution and it really serves the artist, not the listeners.
|
Ahhh. Language barrier problem, I suppose. To "give a shit to" somebody is nonsensical, (a picture of somebody actually handing a turd to somebody comes to mind ) so I assumed you meant "to give a shit about". You can "give shit to" somebody, meaning you bitch to or criticise somebody, but that's something else.
However, you're still ignoring my argument. There is a market for all the crap that labels promote and produce. There are truly serving themselves. However, in order to serve themselves they _must_ serve the listener. Labels wouldn't exist without listeners buying their product.
Oh, and BTW - I'd like to congratulate you on your English. I'm always amazed how some people here can pass for native speakers....i guess I mean native 'writers', of the English language. I hope you don't take my above comment as a condescending "English lesson" of sorts. I'm just letting you know about some English idioms... |

Oh, and to the OP, I know nothing about sites that allow you to sell your music online. Sorry. |

Yeah, I agree on that. But the label won't make the music better.

| I was being completely honest! I realized that my little English lesson might not have been taken well by you, so I thought I'd explain myself a bit. I only give credit where credit is due. |

Yeah, I agree on that. But the label won't make the music better. |
Of course they won't, but you have sure the music from label is proffesional, not amateur. Do you copy? Someone who is making music by 1 year can't be signed to the label, but he can sell his music online if he want to. This topic is talking about it. If there is possibility to hear some short sample then ok, it is good idea. But when you're "buying a pig in a poke"?

Yeah, but I would never do that . I don't do that also with signed records. And neither do you or anyone in the world. People buy CDs after hearing the songs on the radio, TV or whatever.
