i have just recently decided to give up my computing degree to concentrate on djing and music production so i can treat it like a job on its own. I have been djing for 5 years and am rather well known in my city as a good dj, i have my own drum and bass night and dj at various other clubs in my home city. I started producing a year or two ago and my producing seems to get better with every tune i make which is encouraging and i recently got interest from total wipes productions for my music. So the way i look at it is if i am not getting anywhere in 5 years time i will stop treating it like a full time job and join the rat race with every other person. Has anyone else made such a decision in their life? if so how did it work out for them and stuff. Have i made the right decision? in my oppinion i have because money does not drive me so much and i enjoy producing and djing more than anythig else so it least if i dont "make it" i will be happy while i try.
would like to hear other peoples oppinions on this matter

I'm totally with you on this part (I just don't get how people can take an often unsatisfying job just because the pay is good), and, yes, I've done a similar thing, and I'm actually still in the middle of this "five year period". I quit a computer science degree, originally not because of taking up a career in sound engineering, but eventually it did lead to this. And I can't say I'm not happier this way, and I think I've made the right decision. I just need to keep working at it and believing what I believe in (as much as I'm not an optimist), and I'm sure I'll make it one way or another, as I'm sure you will too.

Giving up your computing degree to concentrato en djing is as bad as giving up djing to concentrate on your computing degree. Remember you're just amateur and making enough money to live djing is HARD. And think.... What will you do when u're older? Will you keep on djing the rest of your life? :badass: :drugsarebad:

Righteous :D

Though I have to second what PLUKS said myself... I'm going to go for both a music production and a Software engineering degree make sure there is something to fall back on.

I really work best when I focus only on one thing though. I guess I tried to do both at first when I was studying some years ago and also produced music as a hobby, but the music side just took over and I wasn't happy studying and so everything fell apart. It's true that it's good to have something to fall back on, but I think it depends on the person, and personally I can't succeed as high in something as I'd like to if I don't put all my energy into it.

I don't know if it's a good idea to quit to your computing degree for a career in music.

I think there are lots of people doing music nowadays and just a few earning money with it.
Now it's a lot easier to make music then it was 10 years ago, everybody with a PC can do it. The music-business has changed a lot in the past few years.

I myself am certainly not planning on quitting my job as a programmer (maybe this will change when i'm earning tons with my music ;) ) .

Greetings,

Ramonster

Ahhhh, the great career debate again!
I've always had two thoughts about this: First, you gotta be happy; Second, you need to have enough money coming in to be able to support yourself with a little bit to spare. If you can do this, then you can do it via any method you want, as long as you know that what you do in both areas will satisfy you and give you enough to get a decent life.
If you can get a decent wage out of DJing so that after bills etc you get a little on the side, then thats great; if you ever get bored, you can throw it in take a college course and do something else.
If the numbers don't add up, you could be in trouble. (I couldn't stand doing two jobs at once).

Myself, because of what I write and how long I take to write it, I've always kept job and hobby separate. I intend to be an engineer until I retire, hopefully getting slightly wealthy in the process, then after retirement I'm going be a full-time composer. Thats the plan anyway (assuming the world hasn't spontaneously exploded or something)

You wont get anywhere with a music tech degree..

I did one, and the teachers told us you should see it as a hobby.. producers or whoever dont look for people with qualifications.. certainly not in Britain anyway, I dont know what its like anywhere else..

Anyway, Im not saying I regret doing a music degree, not at all.. I loved every minute of it and learnt very much.. But im not expecting to make money from it unless my band hits it big, or if somehow, I manage to sell my music..

i did 3 years of computer studies and to be perfectly honest im very bitter about the whole education system at the moment.

I feel as tho i've done my bit, i've gone to school, i've gone to college, passed all my exams, can i get a computing job... no - every agency i have ben to say's i need experience, or that im 'over' qualified and clients might find it off putting?! - so at the moment i feel as tho i've wasted 3 years of my life, when i could of been doing music.

music is now my number one priority, its one of the reasons i moved nearly 400 miles from home, and its all i do everyday, all day - hopfully it will pay off in one way or another, maybe later on my productions will make me an income, although i have done a business plan for an DJ/Production/Dancer agency which has been fully approved and will recieve funding if i want to go through with it, so i guess theres always the business side of music to look towards
Living on my planet is so easy, there is peace, there is love, and there is ecstasy :meditate:

Hi,

Why not try finishing your computer degree anyway ? This doesn't mean you have to get a job in that field rightaway, but when you don't succeed with your music you have at least got a degree.
Although I respect your decission, it's not an easy one.
But if I were you, I would want to have more success with my music before I take such a decission. Total wipes and dj'ing are nice starting points for that.
BTW, I am a programmer my self and wouldn't give it up easily (and I love both programming and making music). Maybe if I were 10 years yonger I would think differently about it.
Succes with your decission.
Greetings, Audax
