I wish I had the time and patience to do mastering.
Yeah, knowing how to do it would be helpful, but in the light of the 1st condition I mentioned it doesn't really matter...
Only stupid believe they are stupid while they aren't. |

i ussualy did it with this plugin called "Izotope Ozone" which i used in sound forge. It is very easy, similar to T-racks, where you just play around with couple of bottoms (compressing, equalizing, normalizing, stereolizing )

Merely T-Racks and Soundforge.. Perhaps if I'm in a good mood, I even use Wavelab with loads of vst's and stuff, but not too much though.
When I master a song, I usually just compress the song first, then equalize and stereolize (is that a word? ) and finally, again, compress. There's really nothing more I do. Of course you can tone every channel (every instrument) separately, do all the compressing and equalizing for each track, then combine them, and to that all over again. |

Everything you need to do on the mastering, you can do in SoundForge.
Firstly Eq, then compressor, then the effects.... |

Well, for pure mastering, I use the wave editor of my soundcard with directx effects (I like the Timeworks, the Steinberg, Waves Native series).
There is a nice site where you can find tones (though not free) directx effects: DirectX |

That's totally true - I just find that Cool Edit and Cubase allow me to work a little more quickly since I can have all the tracks playing together and work on effects in another program as it's going.
That said, if I had to choose just one program - it would be soundforge.
