I finally got a new desk to set up my monitors but now it's driving me nuts that the right one keeps humming The speakers are working allright coz when I switch the cables it's the left one which does that humming sound. Sooo.... it must be a problem with the cables I used but I can't really figure where They're all new so the only problem might be that I used quite some adapters and stuff to make their way from the monitors to my soundcard... Here's a professional graphic which shows how I set them up. Maybe it can help solve the mystery of the humming monitor

i'd imagine its something to do with the adapters you've used - if the leads are new, cant see how they are broken, if the leads dont reach, might be worth getting longer ones, are your going to lose some sound quality with using adapters

Well, the length of the cables wasn't the reason I had to use those adapters, I used them because it was the only way to "convert" the monitor cables to cinch plugs. So if there's a problem with those adapters, could it be that I bought some wrong ones (which fit into the sockets but which aren't the right ones for the purpose)?

4 options:
1. bad cables
2. Some electronic device is messing up your audio signal by (could even be your computer monitor if it's on the same power outlet!), It could also be some electronic device which sends out a lot of electromagnetic fields...
3. You've got a ground loop. Not sure what it means but there are devices to eliminate a ground loop from your audio signal... Also make sure all your electronic equipment is connect to a grounded power outlet, if that is the case the ground loop should be eliminated.
4. bad speaker...
Good luck

Could potentially be a bad output on your soundcard I guess... Have you used that output before using these monitors? And what sort of output and adapters are you using to get to what sort of ending do your monitors take?

depends on if he turned around the connectors on his card too, if the hum switches it could be the audiocard indeed...

I had this once too, and surprisingly the plug wasn't plugged in all the way..
In another occasion, it was plugged in propperly, but some dust was between the plug and the hole. When i plugged it out, and plugged it in again, problem was solved.
try this on all ends, and see if it works. Sometimes the plug itself is broken, and you can temporarilly fix it by moving the plug while its inserted.

I should start desinging manualy for audio hardware...
Well, I had this problem with both, my onboard soundcard and my M-Audio card. So they should be working allright. Could it be some software thing on my computer then? As I said the cables are all new and tomorrow or so I will try hooking the monitors up to my hifi to see which part of my cable construction might be causing that sound
Oh, I think I just found what I need I guess I'll get two of these:
...at least if I find out that that adapter construction is messing things up. And xa, I need to go from RCA at my soundcard to plug at my monitors. Or to be clear something like this. And I used two long plug cables, then a T-piece to merge them together, then an adapter from big to small plug, and then a cable from that plug to RCA (or cinch?) into my soundcard.
