well good luck to ya
don't take offence, you're original post is like `my mates asked me to write a hip hop track for a record company and i don't know shit about writing hip hop music`
so you think someone that knows nothing about hiphop music is suddenly gonna burst through the THOUSANDS of semi-pro wannabes and get a deal?

Some of the "best music" out there is written by complete hacks, it all has to do with how generic it sounds, generic + some new ideas = success.
So don't listen to anyone who says "no" , anything is possible.

What kind of sound are you going for? Eastcoast, westcoast, grimey, clean, crunk, party, club, intelligent..etc.?
Does your friend already have lyrics prepared? If so, this will kind of dictate the tempo of your track. |

That formula seems pretty spot-on actually. |

No, no. Now wait. This is hip hop were talking about.
You need:
1) very low bass, so that when ran through your totally tripped up car-stereo system it angers and annoys everyone within half a mile.
2) Very high, crisp and truncated high hats which can be synchronized to the little green flashing lights on the bottom of your car.
3) Vocals that include "bitch" , "ass" , "nigga" , "cap" and "yo"
4) Some cheesy synth brass string combo that imitates classical elements to makes the song sound so much more sophisticated and impress the ladies.
Did I mention I HATE hip-hop? |

thats right. Though i agree that you shouldnt mess with record deals or artist if they ask you to make a musicstyle you dont know anything from.. It just shows how little they know about you and music in general. You could have said 'no', since you are a trance producer. But if you're interested in learning to produce HipHop tracks well i hope i can help ya.. since I am learning it too.
Todays Hip Hop tracks
Layout
Intro - hook 2 x - bars 2x8 - hook 2 x - bars 2x8 - hook 4 x - outro
(hook=chorus, bars=where the mc spits his lyrics.)
Samples
You can use any kind of drumkit you like but make sure you mix/master the kick and snare to sound strong and upfront, these are the important elements in a hip hop beat.
hiphop drumkit <- this is the shit.
Styles
1. track
You can go for electro sounding beats.. you start from scratch, with deep synthesizer basslines and synthbleebs and effects.. needs to sound clean and fresh. My personal favourite style.
2. track and another track
You can go for the oldskool sampled sounds.. wich is taking an old song chopping it up, rearranging it for your melody.. adding your drums over it. Low quality samples and crackling adds charm.
3. track (trumpets and voice from the hook is a part from an old sampled song.)
A combinination of above 2 styles.. where you take your melody from chopping and slicing a part of an old song that you like.. and play your syntheziser bassline over it, adding extra melodic instruments.. and off course your beat.
dont get distracted by the lyrics in the tracks above.. you just analyse the music.

Obscene, dont you think its a little lame to say something like that? At least read / study, get a hold of the right sounding hiphop. Not thinking bout the commercial hiphop now. Its okay if you dont like hiphop, I have no right of complaining about that what so ever, im just complaining about you attitude towards it. Broaden your horizon and at least be constructive..
oh, and kricked, you wrote the same as I did I thinks |
