Hi everyone,

My band is back on track after 2 years of dormancy. From now on, I am willing to play live just by using a controller and a laptop. I have already choosen the controller: it´ll be a CME UF-71. But as far as the laptop goes, I am really lost. I don´t have plenty of money avaiable. I can afford the cheapest ibook on the Apple Store (1.33GHz, 512 RAM) or perhaps a faster PC notebook (something around 1.8 GHz, I guess). I don´t know wich one to choose. One thing I know: If I choose a PC notebook, I´ll also have to buy a Firewire AUDIO/MIDI Interface. What if I buy the ibook? I´m not sure, but I think that Apple´s built in audio hardware already provide a low latency playback, so I´ll just need a midi interface. Am I wrong?

Well, I´d like to know your opinions on this matter. Are you using a similar rig to perform live? What´s your setup? Anyone using PC laptops? What´s the best brand in the PC world?

Notice that I do not intend to trigger simultaneous loops or stuff like that. I just want to use soft synths as if they were hardware synths. Command them from the controller with the lowest possible latency.

I´ll appreciate any help. Thanks a lot!

Hello there,

we're using a PC laptop for Live performances. It's a Pentium M 750 and i've got an audiophile firewire external sound-card.

We use Ableton Live as sequencer a custom-made midi-controller and a behringer midi controller.

I've heard that the internal Apple audio is normally fast enough (low latency), but the performance of an Apple notebook compared with a windows notebook is dissapointing.

i'd allways go for an external sound-card. You've got low latency and you can use it on your desktop too.

What software will you be running?

Greetings,

Ramonster

Hi Ramonster, thanks for your reply! Yeah, I think I´ll go for a M-Audio 3496 Firewire Interface... seems a good choice. As for the ibook X PC Notebook, I´m still in doubt. What do you mean by the performance comparison? Is the ibook slow compared to a PC notebook of the same class? Cuz I´ve always heard the opposite!

Another thing: what´s the brand of your notebook? Is it stable?

I didn´t choose the software yet, I´ll have to experiment with Live and some others and choose the one that better suits my live needs.

cheers

Hello

About the performance (this is for ableton Live) check this thread on the ableton Live forum:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24715

I can't seem to find any information about the m-audio 3496 firewire interface.

My notebook is from Jewel http://www.jewelnotebooks.nl
It's a 'diamond 2600'. It runs very stable (no crashes yet).

Good luck with your choices,

ramonster
