It takes quite a while to become relatively skilled... I remember that when I was younger, my English was so bad, that I couldn't have a conversation much more advanced than to answer the "asl?" question of doom. It takes quite a while to learn a new language, and it wouldn't really make much sense to review lots of tunes before you do.

I think it´s all about english. If you don´t speak english, you cannot write reviews. If one review takes half an hour or more to be written, no one can expect the number of nonreviewed song will go down. People with bad english, will not lose any time with reviewing. My opinion. I think reviews from these people are often reported - reason? too short, too simple (nothing saying). Why it is short and simple.... just fuckin´ bad english. Dunno how to solve this.

Pete's got a point here! Good english is necessary!
I think that more than this, productions skills are necessary as well. I've pointed that out about a month ago.
I had my hesitations about reviewing. I started quite dynamically when i joined the community but when the thought ''Am i a crappy producer indeed???'' crossed my mind i gave up. I worked harder and i got better (i think) as a producer. I had to prove to my self first that i can produce and then get back in reviewing.
How could i review when i couldn't make decent bass and kicks??? How could i ''judge'' another producer's track while I SUCKED??? As i've said,i know what i like but how about the technical parts of a song/track??? I simply can't keep on reviewing sayin' all the time ''I like that'' and ''i didn't like that...''!
Producers have weak and strong skills. One might know a lot about frequencies, another could be better in making nice atmospheres and a third could be a master in making melodies. The combination of all those and many more make a good producer.
But how can you be a good producer if you don't have been educated on music or sound engineering??? Yes,talent is absolutely necessary but still not enough. I think the only possibility is by getting feedback. Not necessarily reviews but feedback. And this is where the ''top rated artists'' should take action. If they don't contribute in this,i don't think that we'll ever reduce that number. If they don't show the will to help how on earth am i supposed to get better??? I've been told that i sometimes make wrong use of fx. But i've never been told how i could use the specific effect in a proper way...
So,IMO will is needed by EVERYBODY!!! Top artists SHOULD give feedback and new not-that-good artists SHOULD be all ears and the opposite. And simply WANT to reduce that number. I know that some tracks are trully not worth the time. But we HAVE to review them. Otherwise we are not as ''active'' as we might think and crappy producers will stay crappy forever.
Maybe i went off topic but these are my thoughts...
Peace!

You don't really need to put focus on technical aspects. As a mere listener, you are still capable of judging the pleasure of listening, comparing to similar productions etc. Listening experience may be even more important than producing. The original idea of a review is evaluation, not teaching. Even if producing tips are good in a community like this, they are not required to make a review valid. |

It's a nice thought, though you forget that we staff members also have a life, and can't stay all day checking out new songs in CTG and review them ALL. Not including the 225 songs that still don't have reviews...

Tell ya what. If you manage to give all new songs a first review, I'll give them a second review. Let me know when you've cleaned up all the songs that don't have reviews...
