I dont understand all the fuzz honestly. I mean, mike east did something foolish, and we laughed about it.. and that's it.. IMO
I mean, when some guy around here makes some huge mistake, then we all laugh about it and move on with our lives right? I mean, why should you be all pissed off, just because you didn't understand that something was a joke and that made laugh about it? I mean, mistakes can be funny right?
I mean, would you be really pissed if you walked trough a busy place and you fell and everyone started laughing? I think this is the way life works, and if you can't handle that.. then it's wrong to blame us about it. I dont think I should apologize for anything I've done here.

To be really honest, I'm hurting from this too.... from all the laughing about it. I mean how far this has got is really ridiculous. I wont apologise for my quote in IRC, because I wont be repressed for finding something amusing - yes it was at the expense of another - BUT how many times have you laughed at the Custard Pie (mmm Pie) jokes?

You've got a point, however, anytime i laugh about someone's foolish moves I don't actually advertise it, being a jerk. |

Mike East
You can say whatever you like what comes to NS-10.. I've done pretty extensive productions with them and nobody complaint concerning the mix or anything. If you do not have personal experience on those particul monitors you can't complain. If they are so bad why there are so many studios that has them? I haven't said that the sound would be perfectly flat, neutral and honest or have I? I've instead said many many times on this forum that Genelec is the ultimate solution when looking at monitoring since they are perfect in many ways.. but whatever..
Also adding to this that.. NS-10's are passive monitors, you can really get bad results if you have crap amplifier.. another thing is that comparing today's monitors sure they are bad except that they have unique sound despite they are old. I was totally happy with my NS-10's when I still had them.
|
The reason so many studios have them is because Yamaha gave them to every studio for free. Their marketing strategy was to make them ubiquitous so people would say "but every studio has them, they must be good". I've owned and worked with NS10's. If you can learn them, or learn anything you can use them. You can drive nails in with a tired iron too, but a better tool for the job would be a hammer.
Hifi vs Monitors
First of all speakers they sell at retail stores ARE NOT hifi. They're about as hifi as McDonalds is a 5 star restaurant. Hifi speakers such as Duntechs, Dunlavys or Spendors would indeed make excellent monitors. They're designed with audiophiles in mind (people who are obsessive far beyond the point of most engineers). Even if you did manage to get your hands on a set of those speakers, finding the proper amp to power them would be an entirely different ball game (and entirely different wad of cash). True hifi speakers would definitely make great monitors. To say otherwise is like saying "That Ferrari would not make a good car. You really need a station wagon if you want to drive.", or in the case of NS10s, "You really need a Yugo, all the studio engineers have them.". .
Most monitors are designed to sell to the lowest common denominator. Like a person said before, they're designed to be flat, but to sacrifice other things. The most important thing to remember is; divorce yourself from marketing lingo. Just because something says HiFi doesn't mean it is. If you're not getting something far better than your average monitor with a set of hifi speakers, then they're probably not hifi. It's a moot point anyway. Most of us can't afford them anyway.
Someone mentioned YSM-1's. I've owned those too. They're pretty decent. They reminded me of NS10's but with more low end response. I'd recommend getting a set of passives and powering them with your own amp. I used a Bryston 4B.
take it easy

Why do you have to swear?
Anyway you misunderstand me. The problem is not his joke, the problem is the quote from IRC. That is bad and hurting. |
As I said earlier, I'm sorry about posting the irc quote here. It was a rather pointless thing to do, and if I've said anything else that hurt you, I'm sorry about that too.
mike:
Of course I must say that I think you're taking the situation a bit too seriously, but still, that's no excuse for me hurting you (I rather take my actions back, than trying to make everyone less sensitive to them).
roland:
As for the swearing, I was explaining what I said earlier when those two things happened (which I btw posted to point out I've already made a fool of myself five times as much as most of you would be capable of in a lifetime). Yet, it's not uncommon that a lot of people swear a whole lot more than I do. Also, the word "fuck" is not considered that strong these days.

You mean Mike? Yes he is taking it a bit too hard. I just try to defend his reactions, for I think he has a point when he get's upset.
I'm no rapper or anything but I do believe that respect is essential in a community like this. It's too large, yes, that's why i stopped using it for a while. However there are super conversations sometimes which are interesting and useful. |

/me hugs his Alesis Active Mk 2s.
In my position, a low-level (read: inexpensive) audio monitor is fine since the colouration from my room is probably rather excessive; it's only 6m^2 of floor and just by my left side is a ladder that goes up to my bunk. On the other hand, I'd really like another pair of LCD monitors like Slammy has. You git. :>
Anyway, how many people around here try and get really expensive acoustic monitors when their room arrangement is totally pants? Obviously, it's a much deeper problem than just slinging a duvet over the rear door and a few tiles around the corners, isn't it? Or maybe this is a story for another thread...

Hi-Fi = high fidelity.
Of course it depends...if a manufacturer makes a speaker and labels it as hifi, it can be crap. |
