Listened to walkman. well, not that great to me. The only track I liked was Tom's Diner, but as many of you know, this is a song by Suzanne Vega. However, walkman mistakes her with Madonna in his comments which also doesn't add any sympathy to him But the remake itself is very nice.

well i think you are forgetting a couple of things here. in 1989 (when you were 7 years old), people had like 60 samples ALL-in-ALL to compose music (the st-xx disks). all samples were 8 it, and we had 4 channels. there were not as many superstar trackers then as there is today, but walkman really stood above them all. just listen to "we're the devils", "rag", "klisje på klisje" etc.. i will give you money if you can find tracks that are as sophisticated and awesome from the SAME period (before 1991). and TIME periods are quite important.. the style of music has changed since then, the technology has changed significantly and the sounds/samples has improved a ton.
pay some respect to those who dominated the scene in the early days. most of the superstar trackers of modern time owe everything to them.
---
walkman retired from the .mod scene in 1991 with his song "tja".
and regarding the toms diner remix.. he never said it was composed by madonna. he said it was done in close co-operation with madonna. you just assume he means "composed by". |
I used to love those days... its quite a challenge squeezing as much out of the 4 channels as possible - even manipulating one instrument into another so we can pretend we have more than the available .... ahhh the good old days (And I was 9!)

who is the best "tracker" of all time? most likely been up before, but lets give it another go. post your favorite, and please post why.
my personal favorite is walkman. he is simply an amzing composer, and amazing tracker, and someone too good to even be inspired by.. he cannot be emulated.
check out his tracks here:
walkman music (mod, xm)
check out: bards tale, finska pekki, tja and we're the devils.

Oh damn, fellow Byteraper
Cool music, definitely, but my choice will be Elwood anyway |

Yes, you are right, I didn't consider that. In that case indeed I wish to change my opinion about him. I assume if he didn't quit in 1991 he could have been a very-very big star in the scene. I'll get more of his tracks - you interested me more.

However, samples of suzanne are called madonna01, madonna02, modonna03 and madonna04. Ugh. Look at my avatar.

hehehe.. yeah, he probably messed up

yes sir.. very influential and groundbreaking composer! i would definitly rank him alongside walkman, no problems there
some more are audiomonster, heatbeat and tip&mantronix.
for those of you who are fans of elwood and lizardking.. guess where they learned everything they know? they completely ripped and emulated the style of tip&mantronix. so saying any of those two are the greatest of all time would be insane. they both made kick ass music though
.x
edit: also.. there is a guy called jesper kyd lets not forget denmark in all this hehe.. he was perhaps the first tracker to introduce ambient stuff in .mod music. amazing guy! today one of the most famous and successful game composers.

okay, xerxes, this is getting interesting. can I have a link to tip&mantronix? you are saying that elwood took their style. okay. I tried to take the style of elwood, but I didn't succeed. if he did succeed in emulating their style, his talents are even more special to me, because he not only emulated their style, but made it his own. His tunes sound very natural, don't they?
Yet, I don't want you, xerxes, always defending those fine trackers from us, the newbies who didn't even have a computer when those legends tracked. That's ok, I understand I don't know many names.
Links, xerxes, links!
