Well, When I'm making jazz/funk I usually plug in a rhodes or something pianoish and start making some chord progressions. So that's the thing I start with.
The ofcourse comes some small percussions just to get me started, then bass, and then I usually redo the progressions - to get in feel with the new bass and percussion. Then comes the drums and stuff.
When doing tranceish stuff it's usually the beat first. And on that solid beat comes a bass to determine the progressions.

I start off with the chord progression. Then I try out many different leads. Thereafter I start out with the percussions work. The second final stuff is adding bass, effects and other stuff.. The last one is mixing. Tho I dont use too much time at the mixing part. Cheers

Load samples. While loading, play a bit with each sample to make a strange melody. After all samples loaded, load drums. Then, record. If needed, erase and re-record. Repeat until I have song. Convert to mp3, and wait before uploading.

I don't have a set routine. I just load interesting sounds, whether they be pads, lead lines, bass, drums or whatever, and doodle around. If something inspires me then I'll use that as the basis of the piece.
For me this is the easy part - I have plenty of awesome sections that are 20 seconds long that I could repeat ad infinitum, but it's the bit that comes next - actually creating a structure and settling on a theme or concept - that takes the time. Occasionally I'm so inspired that the whole thing is done in hours, other times it can take literally months. (or years if I rework ideas later that didn't quite work at the time) |

Load up a suitable instrument which best conveys the intention and feeling of the song. I think that for the last 3 tracks it was a violin, and this is something I really need to get out of since I am, like almost everyone here, neglecting the other parts of the orchestra over strings.
Anyway, that builds the melody line, from which the progression falls out, then reiterate as required.

First thing's first before anything musical begins!!!
1.Crack open some booze.
2.Then pick up guitar/keyboard.
3. See what happens. And record!
Repeat to step 1.

I usually, but far from every time, start with the drums, and then just see what happens.

I seem to be the only normal person here:
I start with the intro. Everything at the same time. I already have everything set up on my head, so I can start right away.
