When you make music, in what order do you produce the song?
Generally I use a generator to get a basssynth (in order to get a bassline I like), try to make maybe one-to-three drumpatterns around 4-8 beats in length (basicly just to have some beats to test the "harmony" of the song), next I try to generate another synth that fits the bassline,
Here is where I generally start adding effects, especially Compressors and Equailizer (after I reacently was instructed in a comperessors use), but have also used reverb, chorus, and to a small extent eq's and other effects for quite some time.
Next, if the resaulting song haves any potential I start adding automatations and put my limited mixing ability to use. If all goes well I have myself a song, othervise I start again or use a part of the resault to start all over again.

also, can anyone tell me about a site where I can update my music,
I have an account at soundlift and I can only upload "complete songs", can anyone give me the name of a site that's good for storing music?

I usually start with the basic foundation of the track. Seeing as i usually make trance, i start out with layering out the bassdrum, clap and a basic hi-hat structure. The next thing is the bassline usually composed out of several elements. At this point the tune should allready be driving, and if it's not: I scrap it
The next thing is adding different percussive elements to extend the basic drumbeat, some effects here (panning, delay, phasers and ring modulation).
Then i start experimenting with different kind of arps synthstabs and pads, which is where i insert most of my time. By combining several arpeggios running at different intervals, you either create a good basis, or make a mess out of the whole song
Either that i start making the melody, which is usually what I spend the least time on, seeing as the supporting background is allready laid out. Usually it's some cheesy supersaw melody
Then my personal touch, teh supporting melody which is usually some kind of piano/bellish sound.
Effects and mixing is added during the whole time, but I usually have to "finemix" stuff after completion. I think atlantis is sick and tired of that phase |

I start by pouring myself a nice cup of something and kicking back in front of my laptop in the most arrogant looking fashion as possible.
After that, it's just random noodling until I find the basis of a song. All the stuff that doesn't work gets stuffed into a folder, that way I can reuse a particular idea in a later track. If I can't come up with a melody and I'm starting to fade, I'll switch to making combinator patches.

I do everything but use a random note generator
"I call architecture Frozen Music" - Goethe
"I hate music, it's got too many notes" - the Replacements
"Composers are always too quiet on their days off" - Mystic Ark
"Everything has been done, but not by me. Not yet." - Anonymous
"Let thy instrument tell us the thoughts of thy heart that words cannot express." - Chrono Cross

Great topic! hahaha
I tend to grab a beer from the fridge, my bad boy 9 euro headset, and 50 euro guitar made in China (made in China is not a bad thing by the way... ) and sit in front of the laptop as I balance the lyrics sheet against the screen wile trying to see through it to find the record button to start recording.
It´s all fun from there on...
Cheers!

Either I just mess around and experiment (70% end up with a 2 pattern length mess named "techno6.rns")
Or I have a pre existing idea from messing around on the piano/guitar/singing to myself/inspiration by a track and I start with some fitting drum loop which I later hope to change and usually don't, and do chords/bass and then melody.
For punk music, I take the guitar and mess around. if withing 30 minutes I can't come up with anything interesting (guitar melody, chord progression, or vocal melody), it's a waste of time to continue. Sometimes working on a failed song gives birth to a new one. Actually two of my band's best songs stemmed from 2 songs we threw away and I tried to rewrite.

Hmm I remember a somewhat simulair topic.. Ah here it is. Topic refers to the first steps only, but still a lot of answers there, can be placed here as well I suppose
Besides the stuff I posted on the last page there, I can add 'play a game' or 'drink a beer' as a step to get my mind off a track for a bit, as I sometimes get completely locked up in a specific part, wondering what to do next. Nothing sounds right then, so I need my breaks

I construct the beat first using a very basic drum machine plugin, then mixdown to audio and fiddle with it (add compression etc.) then put togther some breaks and builds, then add a bassline in any instrument, then tweak it (usually on the Proteus Mod). After which is just a matter of bolstering with sound effects usually tweaked in soundforge, lead sounds etc. Finally i sequence it in Cubase, add effects, then record to the mixer, add EQ. Then record it into soundforge and master it.
varies from time to time depending on the idea.
