Hardware? You don't *really* need a controller with FL, but if you like live playing, I'd suggest grabbing something with about four octaves (two octaves is TINY, only reccomended if you're on the road a lot)
Knob wise, I highly reccomend the Bheringer BCF2k, lots of sliders 'n stuff

Depends, if you don't play any keyboard type instrument you might do well just entering notes in with the mouse until you're sure you want to spend a lot of time and money on this type of this. That said, I have an M-Audio Keystation 88 Some of the other m-audio models would probably be great for starting

What our beginner friend probably means, is what kind of pc do I need to get it working on, could also be my bad as I'm just up and it's 9am here (a).
but you need a pc with some muscle, for the vst's you'll be using in the future.
I'd advice a
Amd Athlon 3000+ / Pentium4 3.0ghz
1 gb ram
Emu0404 or similar beginners pro soundcard.
That's what you at least need imho, if you really want to go nuts with your future digital compositions

No need to go all out and get a dedicated expensive midi keyboard. A normal low tech keyboard with midi in/out will do just fine. I have a commercial house producer friend whose keyboard isn't even touch sensitive. got it for 40$ or so. I got mine for 75$ at radioshack and a BCF-2000 for knobs and sliders.
Laregely speaking, most hardware a computer musician needs nowadays is actually software! Like VSTs (if you don't know what that is, then check this: http://www.widisoft.com/english/vst.html. I refer to it as a software synthesizer)
So investing in your computer is a good place to start. Make sure you have enough free hd space for software, your music files and samples (Make sure you organize your folders from day one, too) Strongest computer and fast as possible is obvious. The minimal requirements depends on your software, which I don't work with so I can't tell

Well the most important is to spend on the cpu at least 3.2ghz P4 and 2gb ram!
I have Keystation 49 and its ok...
maybe a real audiocard?
Buy lots of stuff if you have money!

i have a pair of them myself, their very nice indeed - bass responce is abit weak for the type of music im currently making - but the over all sound of them is amazing. I'll probally get some Genelec 8040A's to run along side my BM5A's at some point
