Well, I was just wondering, because I didn't get to see TiS in action, that maybe some of you who were active there can tell me something about that site. And maybe some comparison to CTG aswell.
And another thing.. traxinspace.com says that the work for TiS2 has begun since October 2005 and it gives an email which is of course broke  so do you know anything about TiS coming back or something?

well, I joined in 99/00, and I can say that TiS was much like CTG, but with uploading of course!
They had their charts, their trance kiddies and their idiotic reviews, but it also had kickass music, and a chat which I still today miss (it's based on the chat over at www.digichat.de) <- this chat program still brings a tear to mine eye.
Alot of great names came and went, and alot of fun things transpired, mainly the chat of course  But I do know that some pretty weird antics happend in the forums aswell.
But, TiS never matured, there never were any controls of reviews or comments and flaming soon ensued, unknown source made a joke song about TiS in which he summarized the phenomenon pretty well.
Also, TiS had for a limited time some compos aswell, which I think were pretty cool, but since I myself was a n00b at that time, I didn't enter any songs (and with good reason, I would have gotten squashed!)
TiS then later added a secondary site thanks to the massive influx of trance, this one called tranceinspace, I don't really know the significance... because it never really caught on, because shortly after that the site went dead, only to a few months later completely vanish on us.
I like many other artists who were there were at a loss when the site vanished, because most of us had taken TiS for granted for so long, but to be honest, what I most of all miss even today with TiS was the chat with it's insane people.
You don't meet people like say KING JELDOR or Moonraver (thank heavens, and no.. not the real moonraver, the bliming copy of him that was an arse!)
And you certainly don't meet arrogant bastards like PAM either
(and yes, Kruser thought that PAM was a girl, which in fact .. HE wasn't )
Some people vanished when TiS died, they never made it back from the depression, I and a few others like Jace, A98, Unknown Source, Kruser, Dfast are still around though, so ask them aswell while you're at it! Some people also went pro I think, like Idaho (house of cards?) and A98 (you ARE pro today aren't you?)
But as far as the rest of us go, I think we're pretty insane still
Differences:
When I read the so called reviews over at TiS (I use the way back machine) , it's evident that the review standard here is alot better, and with the trance kiddies at a minimum, this site is the best so far in terms of reviews IMO.
As far as the community goes, well yes we do mess around in the forums alot, but I still miss people in the chat room, ffs it isn't so hard to get mirc working, come on in people! (perhaps some mania will ensue?)
As far as the musical quality goes, I'd dare say that it's the same although the scene has shifted from modular formats into rendered ones, the same type of people remain.
There's the boring monotome songs, there's the insane funny songs, and you've got your serious commercial songs aswell, everything's the same
But, one thing has changed, the innocence that was around TiS is gone, people back then had just begun to debate the lawfullness of releasing a remix of say a beatles song, theories ensued, battle lines were drawn, samples were stolen and restolen and lawyers were involved.( I think TiS had at one point a cease and desist order.. but I can't remember if it was a rumor or not... can anybody confirm this?)
Today, none of that exists because everybody knows the laws and where they're applicable, everybody knows MORE so to speak.
But you know, there's one thing about the old TiS days that I miss, and that's the modular formats.. not because they were opensourced, but because of the personal comments inside them....Today's songs don't have that. (well some do, but they're less than one percent of released songs)
So yeah, it's a long read... if you read this far... kudos for staying awake!

My dad used to download songs from TiS back in the days when I was too young and had no internet at home... That's how I found about many peoples: Awesome, a98, Cube, Anders Akerheden, Anders Viklund (some kickass trance there, gotta admit!), MiraculuM, etc...
Those were the days

I miss that too... I try to put comments in my mp3 stuff, but not on the scale I used to in my tracked formats... everyone would try allsorts! lots of lame ascii attempts were made by lots of people, me included!! those were great days
BTW, just to comment on the 'reviews' at TiS... during the early period of TiS, the reviews were excellent, with a good structure and they were excellently moderated (I was on the ROC there btw...) but as TiS outgrew itself, no one could really cope with it all, so reviews went to the shit, and I think that in the end over 50% of the 60000+ tunes went unreviewed....(anyone know any exact figures? I quit even visiting TiS at the end of 2001)
The best thing I took away from TiS, was some great friends I made there . That's what it's all about for me though

well i would really say i'm pro getting few releases out doesn't really say anything. i think pros are those leading stars of the music scene with lots and lots of years of experience behind. besides i still feel i have a lot to learn and to achieve and i still hang around in sites like this, only i can't upload that many songs anymore..
all that chat stuff and other were really great in TiS, it made it actually feel like a community, even if the chat users was just a small percent of all the users in TiS. but atleast personally i don't think those kinda times can ever return. it was when internet was quite new to mass, chats, forums etc.. nowadays we are quite used to all that so it's not as exciting anymore. i don't know how many people use the ctg chat here?
bacicly back then when pretty much everyone was just startting out as a producer it was fun to exchange tips, tracks, reviews and so on..
what i miss most about this compared to this site, is well obviously the amount of people, TiS was huge, i don't know exact numbers though.
also the bright colours, i've never really liked this dark layout ctg has, neither i ever use dark layout to websites i design.
also the artist of the month, track of the month and track of the day/week was all so well designed and i remember how big it was back then and everyone wanted to have their track in the frontpage..
also the review system was a lot better, i can't say the reviews were better but the system was.. there was this quick review or what was it called, to which anyone could use to review songs. basicly doesn't matter if it's short, long, 10 or 4 or anything, there was no limitations or moderations. and then there was this official review, where you had to sign up for a reviewer and give good detailed long reviews that were checked by the staff.. review a couple and you get your own song into the queue. basicly when one person reviews 50 songs and gets a review for 5 of his own, the system works and soon all songs had an official review... (until out of the blue 10 000 new members show up and upload 50 songs each)
i think if ctg really wants to please it's users, it could adopt some good ideas TiS had and still be ctg. like light colors, new arrangement to front page atleast.. song of the week, month, artist of the week month etc to the front page. review system, official reviews and quick reviews, sign up for a reviewer, do couple and get a one review yourself. comments box here is more or less to say "*downloading*" or something, and most people don't really know the difference of when to use comment box and when review box.

I think the same process happens at CTG. The community grows and reviews get more sloppy. More songs are left unreviewed. So far, we are managing to review many-many tracks and the non-reviewed number is pretty much constant. However it may change.
There is also a direction which may grow: that accidental people are less frequent here nowadays. We appeared from the tracking scene, almost every active musician here has tracking scene roots. And somehow that air is preserved to this day. The community is integral and has a strong motivation basis. I hope it develops in the same or similar route.
