i think if ctg really wants to please it's users, it could adopt some good ideas TiS had and still be ctg. like light colors, new arrangement to front page atleast.. song of the week, month, artist of the week month etc to the front page. review system, official reviews and quick reviews, sign up for a reviewer, do couple and get a one review yourself. comments box here is more or less to say "*downloading*" or something, and most people don't really know the difference of when to use comment box and when review box. |
I agree.

well, I joined in 99/00, and I can say that TiS was much like CTG, but with uploading of course!
They had their charts, their trance kiddies and their idiotic reviews, but it also had kickass music, and a chat which I still today miss (it's based on the chat over at www.digichat.de) <- this chat program still brings a tear to mine eye.
Alot of great names came and went, and alot of fun things transpired, mainly the chat of course But I do know that some pretty weird antics happend in the forums aswell.

Well, John, you pretty much joined in the waning years after all the great stuff happened (it really fell apart in 2001). I think I started in '98, so I had a couple more years of the "good stuff" before it hit the fan.
So, commenting from a slightly earlier viewpoint, I think TiS was alright. It was far more diverse than here (by way of genre) and the overall community was "of an intelligent nature". Likewise with most of you oldtimers, I got to know a few people and still regularly chat to a few of them on #modarchive (TiS was also responsible for my IRC addiction). Sure, there were a number of promotions and all sorts of charts (which were already acknowledged as being unrealistically skewed and a LoB anyway), there were far too many high scores (my later mod work would probably be worth a 15-20 based on what my first mods got) but hey, the people were cool.
By the time the site went down in, oh, what, 2002/2003? By that time the site was in such a sorry state people were probably glad to see it go. Still, most of us found "refuge" in homemusic and or here, or wherever; however, the community was what made the place workable.
It was good while it lasted; I only have fond memories because I didn't hang around when the shit started flying. And by then I was a regular on #modarchive anyway, so I didn't need to scour the boards, or visit starchat (which was either down or port-banned by uni).

nice text there johnny marwinous. got a tear up my eye.
I remember me starting tracking in the late '99 without knowing there's an entire huge scene about the same thing. then somehow I found a website called audiotronix, where a few people were releasing their music (scienide, dj fastrax, twisted mc [fallout], quiff and some others I can't remember) and then I found a link to TiS. I was heavily stunned when venturing through the frontpage into other artists' profiles. downloaded some music, ripped a bunch of samples (yarr!) and created myself a profile. then at some point I started getting reviews for my music. I was more or less stunned with the fact that someone was actually listening to my creations and making an effort to comment them.
then at some point I noticed an icon on the frontpage that said "starchat". I had been using some finnish chats before so at least I knew what the term chat means (newbie me.) clicking the chat icon was a start for something greater. lots of nice people there to chat with and they all had the same interest with me: tracking. at that point I was terribly hooked to tracking in general, actually you could say my life was based on tracking.. and eating.
the only thing I really miss about TiS was the starchat. I recall someone trying to resurrect it some years ago, with zero luck though. but damn, an idea of a sort of a class reunion.. wouldn't that be a blast? although lots of old TiSers are still around, it would be swell to meet up with the rest of the starchat gang.
...PAM was a MAN?! that dirty biatch.

Ah, the old TiS worms are crawling up through the woodwork, I totally forgot that both slamster AND gopher were TiS people back then
Gopher: Damn that makes me wish I had been faster on my toes!
(I knew I should have tracked more ) <- 97/98 I basically did nothing else
BUT track... oh yeah, those years were full with parties
And oh yeah, anyone talked to XoNaR recently? I've got the dude on my msn, but he never answers... and how about Beatsource aka Planetshitter? (err... shifter.. sorry)
MatthjisB is also one of the oldies now that I think about it
Hmm, perhaps we should all make a sort of compiliation of some old songs which were made "for" TiS to show off how music was back then?
I certainly know which song i'd contribute... I'd go and throw in the song I made for the NightmareZ compiliation hehe! (A Wonderful Lovesong)
(and yes, I've still got S.L.A on msn, he rarely comes on though, he's currently out playing gigs as a dj around europe!)
ERhm, oh yeah, btw Dfast, I thought you had heard the song "Kruser Is Ghey"
(hint hint: it's about .. PAM)

And me. First came across the site around the start of '99 using my brother's connection, but didn't release my first track until later that year, followed by a number of other releases during the following year, until I started moving more towards MODPlug Central after switching from FT2 to MPT (around the time TIS collapsed too). Wasn't active in the forums much though, although I remember getting my first review from Slammin' Vinyl.

I remember modplug was a nice place to hang around too. Although I spotted it when it was almost over. Then it died and then it came back to live, but stayed dead anyway.
Homemusic.cc was a promising place. Pity it didn't last long.

You forgot me too, my swedish friend Otherwise I really liked your contribute to the topic, John !
I registered on TiS early -99 (with this same nick as well)
... and have to agree with Slammy and Gopher about the early TiS; the reviews had a very good standard, like CTG had for a while. I remember I waited pretty long for the first review on a song, but the wait was worth it - I learned a lot each time. Like TiS, CTG are experiencing the problems which showed up - not to the same extent though + people around here are aware of previous sites mistakes and could probably learn from there.
I agree with a98 about the review system too. This has been discussed in the early CTG, I suggested the TiS ideas... But I guess most people are happy as it is.
---
The Tracking Scene, the sharing of open source material is what I miss the most. There was a magic to look at other compositions and learn, and rip some great newly found samples
Well I guess it's like CD's are replacing cassettes; life goes on but the old stuff leaving strong memories.
There are many people that still lives in this world, just head over to ModArchive
Also there are people who want to keep it, but also want to keep up with todays technology - like me; Renoise
