I have been listening to some classical music lately (mostly Mozzart but many aother also) and i was wondering if there are any copyrights on their songs. This may be a silly question but i have to ask!!!
PS: If there is no copyright, weren't they the first unsigned artists???

haha, well they got payd, so I wouldn't say unsigned
correct me if I'm wrong, but copyright lasts a hundred years.
yet, you can buy copyright so I wouldn't be surprised if some company
bought up classical pieces or some shit like that.
if it can happen with the beatles..
but anyway, since most people will perhaps recognize the piece, and since
you'll prolly give credit to the original writer, there shouldn't be a problem.. right..?
classical music can be considered 'public domain'.

hmm, now how was it.. I think it's like this: you can cover classical and traditional songs without asking permissions once the original author has been dead for 60-70 years. but when making money with them covers, can't remember. all the copyright issues with music are stuff that make my head dizzy.

Yep, just to clarify:
Standard copyright lasts somewhere between 60-100 years depending on the medium (books, written or recorded music, or whatever). This means that you can obtain the manuscript of say one of Mozarts orchestrations and use it for whatever without infringing anything.
However:
Recorded music is still subject to the same copyright. So, if you rip, say the London Symphony Orchestra's performance of a symphony from 1980, then you will be in breach of copyright - not because of what they played (which is in the public domain), but because of the fact that the recorded work stands out as copyrighted material by itself.
