First, load up an empty rack.
It's best to work with the sequencer window detached, for that go to Window -> Detach Sequencer Window.
Now we'll work on the main window of reason:
Right click on black area, create -> Line Mixer 14:2
Right click on black area, create -> NN-XT Sampler
Click the "open" icon on the sampler, and load a sample from any of the 2 integrated sound banks.
Go to the sequencer window, and click on the first icon on the toolbar at the top left, should look like 3 books. There you have a piano roll and you can experiment with the sound of the sample.
When you want to record anything, push the red record button and play button to start, should be intuitive. You can use MIDI keyboard or Pianoroll for recording. You can also draw notes by hand with the pencil and line tools on the toolbar.
That should be it to get started! Just go creating samplers and sequencers when you need them, tweak and turn knobs until it sounds right, you'll get the right feeling in half an hour
