Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchasing a midi keyboard but I have a question about it. I have a normal sound card, a Soundblaster Live 24-bit card which works fine for me now using Fruity Loops with several VST instruments.
I was wondering whether a midi keyboard is causing more latency so I also need a new soundcard or is sound card lantency not involved using a midi keyboard instead of a computer keyboard?
Thanks in advance. |

Get the midi keyboard, and get these drivers for your Sb Live!: kX Project
If you have a decent CPU, the kX drivers will allow you to have 2ms latency. Virtually instant. Don't spend money on an expensive soundcard that does what free software also does
I've been using this driver for almost forever now.. I can't even remember, 1-2 years or so. And it's fantastic!
Hope this helps

To answer the original question:
A midi keyboard will not affect latency in any way, as it is determined by the driver only.
And further, free software can never improve the quality of a soundcard's converters, which is what "expensive" soundcards "do".
erm... er... tech n00b. |

It can does decrease the latency as Creative never bothered making ASIO drivers for the Live! series. IIRC kX drivers by default switches front and rear outputs because the snr is better on the rear output, so the quality is slightly improved indirectly by free software.

Actually, cdnalsi is right about this one. It's also a question of drivers, and back when I used an SB Live, I too could get a much much lower (audio) latency by using some third party ASIO drivers, rather than the MME ones that creative has created.

Well, when you speak of latency, thats not an issue between the keyboard and the software.
The keyboard doesn't affect the latency. Plugging in a different keyboard won't make the midi signals reach the computer and allow them to be interpreted any quicker. Thats dependant on the speed of light.
The drivers affect how well the software works. So, if there is a latency problem, it depends on your sound drivers. If there is no ASIO drivers from the vendor, that doesn't affect how different *MIDI keyboards* work - they'll all have the same latency because the problem isn't with the keyboard, it's with the communication and management between the computer and the sound card.
So, the answer is, no, different MIDI keyboards do not affect the latency. It's not a keyboard-computer driver issue; it's a computer-sound card driver issue. They are two separate things.

Yeah, that makes sense. Actually, I've never heard of noticable midi latency, even caused by a soundcard or it's drivers. Even my soundblaster 16 was perfectly fast for me (the midi stuff that is). The latency you're experiencing is probably audio related. Cdnalsi's suggestion is still a nice solution.

Thank you guys for your help!
