I should preface this by saying that I'm a musician, not a recording artist... But I want to record and master my own stuff..

Hello. I grow increasingly frustrated with my simple home studio setup and can't seem to find the information that I need.

The music I write involves an electronic piano and vocals. Not very difficult. Right now, I'm running my MXL condenser mic in to an Art Tube pre-amp. The pre-amp then runs in to an old 4-track mixer.

My keyboard is wired directly from the lineout of the keyboard in to the mixer also. I use the mixer to set the volume of the mic and the keyboard and then use the output of the mixer in to my PC's line-in.

...this sounds like crap.

There's not really a buzz in the recording, but a loud hiss.... It's just such a muddy sound!

I have the computer in a separate room as to not get noise from it.

I just want a nice, clean-sounding recording without all the hiss, buzz, and what-not. What gear do I need? Why is this all so difficult?

Does it still sound noisy if you record those devices straight into the soundcard, bypassing the mixer? If not, then it's the mixer... if it does still sound noisy though, You'll need to do some troubleshooting... try plugging in each of the devices into an amplifier, and see if there's still noise... if so, then the cords on the devices could be old and crappy and in need of repair.... if not, then it could be your soundcard... so try plugging other devices directly into the soundcard and check to see if there's still noise... if there is, then chances are it's the soundcard... in which case you should check all the soundcard's internal connections, and if you don't find anything, try another soundcard....

troubleshooting is all a matter of reducing the possibilities until you know what's causing the problem... so do just that... make sure you test EVERY piece of equipment out with other equipment that you know works.... and you'll eventually figure out the problem... make a chart with all the equipment if you have to, and as you find out what works and what doesn't, check it off... either way, good luck ;)

... btw, assuming that you have working equipment, this setup should be fine for recording ;)
