Orange vocoder works good, and ofcourse native instruments vokator, both not free vste's though ...
As already said , vocoded fx are not eq friendly , so maybe u stick an eq on the vocoded channel so u can make it less passive ..

That bugs me too (since the built in synth is good) but you can just do it the old fashioned way and turn off the internal synth and send in the carrier and modulator in the left and right. And I prefer to think of the sound as "delicate" :P
