Simple:
Hardware makes the sound real.
Software makes the sound realistic.
Even though the distance between the two are shortening as technology advances, you will never be able to reproduce the sound of a real instrument 100%. Never.

Actually, that's not entirely true..
Can anyone say "missing .dll"?
It's not that I don't support software composing, god knows it makes our life a hell of a lot easier, but the difference in quality and that special "human touch" is too much to ceompare the two.

In truth, you can probably get about 80-90% of the human touch using software samplers. It just requires three things:
Lots of money
Lots of time
Lots of patience
Basically you have to micromanage each instrument to play like a human. So, in fact, for a 32-piece orchestra, you're doing the work of 33 people. Of course, doing that obeys the 20/80 rule of percentages. It may be even more biased (5/95 maybe?)
And people wonder why I'm sick of this shit. :o)

Brilliant. If I had the means to record it, I'd throw my slightly out of tune (*very* slightly) upright piano into every song I write. The sound on it destroys every software piano sound I've ever heard, and it's not a "good" piano by any means. Now, my mother's 1920s Steinway Grand... that would be amazing to record. |

I have a digipiano, hammer mechanic, 88 keys, like a piano. With MIDI-Out and Audio out I can achieve realistic and real sounds correspondingly. Of course, it's still electrical, so you'll never achieve the sound of a live recording, but.... Compare mouse/pianoroll composing with recording live from such a piano....
And I think our friend was refering to hardware synthesizers/samplers/sequencers instead of any music software. I think that one can compose using hardware only. Just build up your own rack instead of using Reason I have no clue what would be different, other than it would sound "kinda better".
