It did a while back at least, by some odd reason. I couldn't figure out how to save a 16-bit sample (except by rendering the track), and they said at the forum that renoise always saves 24-or-was-it-32-bit even if the imported sample orginally was a 16 bit one.

I have not tried renoise for a lil while now, since I've been making game music in modplug, so I have no idea about new versions.

In the latest Renoise Beta it wont autoconvert. You can also see and choose bitrate in the sampleditor now.
You can also choose to save modules with wav/gzip/flac compression, and browse and load samples from modules directly as well.
You can even convert samples in a module to ogg files. Very nice for sharing modules online.
