Goph, it's a bit harsh to tell somebody who's barely started to quit, donchathink? ;)

on Evolution - it's a nice idea, the beat is phat, but it's very lacking in arrangement and overall groove. Try studying some other dnb songs to get an idea as to what kind of structure you should have, cause I'm telling you right now, 1m30s is NOT gonna cut it.

stay away from "friendly record reps" that seem "young and cool".. these guys often cheat you into a bum deal. Read every document, trust nobody but yourself, don't accept legal advice from a lawyer they pay. (chances are he'll lie to you)

Very true, that... be very wary of the "we'll make you famous!" claims. Studies show that something like 90% of the profits from records by the high profile artists like, say, Madonna, or Coldplay (or any other big name) pay for the massive flops they (the record companies) sign. (souce: cm special, "getting yourself heard")

I wish Coldplay would end up with a manager like the last manager Jimi Hendrix had; a one that'd embezzle all the profits and get the band broke.

I fucking hate that band. They're a bunch of fucking pansies, the whole lot of 'em. I dunno who said that last sentence (though I suspect it's Liam Gallagher, he's got a talent for saying shocking shit), but he was right.

Ever hear the saying "don't put your eggs in one basket"?

Key points to marketing music - get your music up on as many sites and in as many places as possible.

Your biggest site should be myspace. If you have the bandwidth to host banners, and a basic sense of html you can advertise yourself to death their very easily.

When I'm active there I post about 50 banners a day and have millions of banner views a month. This translates to about 100-150 plays a day with very little work, which is more than CTG will ever offer even someone at the top of the charts. If you are playing live performances, you can also search by region and find people who might be interested in your music to send your message out to and hopefully get out to a show.

What else...? garageband.com has a very nice reviewing system that actually repays reviews you do for other people with reviews for your tracks. Eventually you get permanent chart placement, etc. etc. A couple crappy bands have even been signed off of there. (Drowning Pool anyone?)

purevolume, redfizz, local music boards, taxi.com, there are a million sites out there with interested audiences. You need to take the time to research these sites, find out which ones you should spend your time promoting to, and then do it. Local universities, local clubs, anywhere where you can get "face time" is important too.

Always carry a business card (use overnight prints to get some made up cheap) and give them to anyone who seems remotely interested in your music. Having something people can stick in their pocket to remind them later on to check you out is key.

Got a live show coming up? Get 1,000 11x17 flyers printed so that there are four flyers per page, giving you 4,000 flyers once you cut them in half twice. Get those up everywhere. Record stores, local hang outs, dorm entrances, windshields outside of clubs where music like yours is played, etc. etc. Go into clubs where you have a show coming up dressed professionally and hand out flyers as if you are a member of the staff. This makes it seem like a much more important event than it really is.

Hand out CDs, hand out flyers, get people to know who you are.

The first step to having a fan is having a person who knows that you create music.

In music there are no shortcuts. You are your own factory, delivery, and marketing for your product. ahouseofcards.com sees direct results from these. 24,000 visits since opening 2 years ago - nowadays an average of 70 visitors per day with no promotion done directly. Just links from outside sites where our music is also featured.

A new song of ours sees 1,000 downloads pretty darn quickly, with much of that in our "target audience" range (people in Columbus, Ohio or nearby).

How do you get a record contract? Give them a sure thing. Show them that "hey, these guys have actually sold 5,000 of their own CD without any marketing help, in a fairly small environment. They want this, and they're willing to work for it."

That's not all, but it's enough for one post...
