Guess you have to optimize it for something :) . I have really hit a wall when it comes to using effects, and I use alot. When I have a few automatations it really starts to freeze up, been trying to adjust the buffers, pool and hardware buttons but well, hit another wall.

Yes, I have tried reading the help, saw something about freezing vst values that sounds promising, but hey, perhaps some of you guys can help

Not really trying to make you guys fix my computer (hoping is another matter), kinda thought this kind topic needed some discussion.
Regards
Tyr

I find myself hitting that wall in every track I make.. So what I do is turn effects off until I can actually listen to (part of my track at least) live. If I really wanna know what it sounds like I will render the part I am working on with all effects/compressers on. In one of the songs I made I found it impossible for FL not to lag my system, so I was forced to make a change then render that 10-15 second phrase to hear it -_-.... Other suggestions get costly... New soundcard/cpu you know...

Knew about that, was thinking about rather using brains then brawn (buying a deacent cpu at least is brutal thease days, mayby a soundcard though
)

Render the tracks down to wav, and re-insert them as samples. That was you'll have all your effects intact, but it wont be taking hardly any CPU.
I used to think I had a very refined sense of humour, and that's why people never laughed at my jokes. Now I've realized that I'm just not funny.

Yeah, I do the same - if some instrument plays a theme and uses some VST or an effect that takes too much CPU, I render that theme to wav and get rid of those VST's and effects. So to this day I use a 667 Celeron with 256 Mb to compose all my music, some of which uses loads of stuff!

Its a common issue eh? No matter how much you upgrade you always need more CPU and memory! I know the feeling well :) Im the same with money - the more i have............

Anyway.. I have personally found that as my experience increases and my knowledge grows, this is no longer an issue. Whereas before i would try and load a silly number of VSTi's (all the 'top-end' ones) and use a silly amount of fx on each, i now keep things clean and efficient. I do this by using reverb, sidechain compression, and delay using send channels and only using the big boys when needed.. Now i focus on up to about 8 VST's and try to be as sparing as possible on each of their own channels - ensuring that i 'try' and use sends, unless i want to insert an effect independantly.. I also find myself being more creative and focusing on using what i have rather than what i want (on a limitless system)..

Maybe there's something you can take from this - or maybe you are already being 100% efficient and sparing already! In which case... ignore this.. ;)

Tried onstalling asio4all, turned out it crashed my computer alot and was worse. I used to have steinberg asio which was good but a reacent collapse of my harddrive (along with most of my old work) coused it to behave erratically.

Yeah, resampling seems to be the best bet or even recording mixer tracks seperatly and then mixing.
My effect using has become more efficient lately so it's less of a problem, but a problem still.

Oh, and thanks for the advice guys

Tyr
