i could be playing around with the sound, tweaking details and finalising a production for weeks or even months before i actually feel satisfied ;)

Do you actually feel satisfied, or just feel satiscation? There is a big difference, and I have only come across the latter in my life. :)

Ye, ye! I agree with you my friend! I shouldve expressed myself a bit more clearly! :)
Well, to tell you the truth i never felt completely satisfied with anything i made because theres always room for improvement. Plus, ive noticed (as im sure you have as well), that the more you toil over a production, the more impaired your objective judgement is!! I mean even if something might sound completely fine to the 'naked ear', you start getting all these obssessive ideas that there are discrepancies in the sound, some notes might be off pitch, and so on...
So what i do is i try to find out where the limit is! That is, when you tamper with the track more than necessary, you start destroying it! Its just better to stop, not because the track is perfect, but simply because your abilities as a producer regarding that specific track at that given time, simply cannot improve that track any more! Its better to just move on to a new production.
So the satisfaction i feel comes from the fact that i say to myself: Yes, the track is as good as it can be according to my abilities! Ive worked on it as much as i could, and now its time to release it!

..But i never actually feel.. satisfied :crap:

:)

Thought so. ;)

Yeah, it's a notable thing. You make a good song, and sometimes you contunue work on it and make it worse. hehe That's really stupid, but happens all too often.

I wonder, how can you know when it is time to call it quits and move on to the next song?

A pretty good way for me to realise, is when enjoyment turns into frustration!
Up to the point where you find yourself feeling pleased and good with what u r doing, then its good to continue. Because for sure u'll have the positive energy to improve your composition.
When you start feeling frustrated its time to stop. Like for example: It sounds shit, what more can i do to improve it, im not getting any more ideas, i wonder is that last tweak i made actually good or did it make the track worse now?
I mean when feelings and doubts like these start creeping into my mind, i know its time to stop! Because if im not completely immersed into the whole process, and have an aura of negativity and bad energy around me, there is no way i can improve something from the current state it is in!
I guess the trick is to not concentrate on actually improving the song, but to let ideas and emotions out into the open, and come what may! If the song does improve, then you've achieved your goal in a roundabout way :D

Yeah, true... Often these days a face myself beeing bored with a song 15 minutes after I've loaded the project, trying to finish of an old tune.

I guess more "play" and less "seriousness" is needed then.

I can write a song from start to finish in about 5 mins sometimes if I know where i'm going with it...

but very often I write a song from start to finish within a day. Producing it tho, and recording it.. is another matter entirely :wall:

Start by playing piano with chord structures then find a tune to fit it. Get used to playing that tune, add other parts until you are satisfied. Record it, then play it.
You will find that you can start planning arrangement.
Set this to sequencer.
Now you can start on sounds and rhythm.
Then add proper intro and outro.
Add atmosphere. (I own atmosphere :eyebrows: so that's handy.)
Then start tinkering with the mastering.
Add, compressor to drums.
Leveller to overall output.
When happy, step back and admire your handywork.
Upload to CTG and let the masses rip it to shreds
