So yeah. Quick look at my favorite artists list, for example. Most are somehow distributed through one of these huge conglomerates. Some have independent labels, others out of print, others unavailable. It's just too depressing to think that most of the money milked out of me doesn't even get to the artists.
Plus, say one lives in a country with a limited market. It's the not-so-good-side of supply and demand. One has a demand for something, but there isn't a supply.
Therefore, anarchist hackers don't sound that bad to me.

Yup.
It's all fucked up isn't it?
The flip side to all of this are companies like CD Baby which allow you to sell your music in a professional manner whilst keeping most of the income.
My newest tracks:
No Space (sonus' fan the flame remix)
Quench
A New Vision (vocal edit feat. Henriette)

guys guys.. I don't even dream to have any paid, I just want to have my own CD, not burned but original with covers etc. Nobody should expect any incomings if he's making el-music, so if they will pay me even $0.1 for a month I would be very satisfy, just because of having my own CD released! It's like a dream when just half of it might become real..
I've got a nice job, I have some plans for the future (tourism etc) and propably the music will be always with me but on the 2nd plan (and propably non-profit)

Hehe, start your own label..?
Seriously, it's one of the reasons I'm setting one up. I got three records
seeying the broad daylight next year, one of them 'selfreleased', if you will.
Although all three will be vinyl..

To answer the question - I have never been approached by a label.. because i'm not good enough.
Now, with that in mind.. I tihnk labels are a great thing. Can you imagine if any old shit was released?? Well, obviously it is (I do it here all the time, haha!)
But record labels have access to amazing producers and studios that we would only dream of..
And ok, there's alot of shit out there, and record labels make thousands of pounds, and I have heard stories of the artist's having their creative muscle compromised.. but people can listen and buy whatever music they want, whether its Britney Spears or a PartySan track, it really doesnt matter.. nobody's gonna arrest me if I pay a fiver for PartySans album, or whatever...
Im just saying that these labels arn't a problem. It just means you have to work really hard to impress them.... and so it should be.
I think the thing with me is, although im not against P2P file sharing, Im not 100% for it because I LOVE buying a hardcopy of a cd. I love everything. I love opening it up, sticking it in a hifi and hearing track 1-13 or whatever as they should be heard. I love reading the inside sleeve, and more than anything I dont download it and leave it on my desktop cluttering everything up. Its real, its physical, I can wipe my arse with it if i wanted to..
Cant do that with Track1.MP3
Anyhow... I digress..

I would like the money. They may even not listen to the music, if they just buy it and I get the cash. |

I was approached by the label and they've released two of my tracks at beatport and then another Internet music shop started selling a compilation of several of my tracks. Unfortunately, I received no money for this. Or maybe fortunately.

Hi everyone, i have a question...
has anyone been approached by a label, or has anyone any experience with labels? like how they work, what they do, what they dont do, what theyve said to you or what theyve not said that you would like them to? what do you like about labels, dislike about others. really any opinion is welcome.
(hmm that was a lot of questions actually)
thanks in advance for you help

I have now 2 tracks signed and they will be released in 6 months. Both are digital and other one will be also a cd single. I get that usual 50% of winnings, and 25% in case of remix, but the labels aren't big enough to pay signing money.
The way I've done it was this:
-Not giving tracks for free downloads (most of labels don't want tracks which are exposed widely already)
-Putting more effort in finalizing tracks to make them as good as they can be.
-Active demo sending to the labels (I've gathered a list of proper labels for my music)
Some of labels have sent some constructive feedback even when refusing to sign the track, but this depends a lot on the A&R. Some of them like to give feedback and help you (if your stuff sounds promising), some of them don't answer at all if they aren't interested in signing the track. I guess that the amount of demos they receive affects too, but it's not the rule, I've got some feedback also from bigger labels which definitely get huge piles of demos.
What do I think about labels on common..? Well, of course they are a good thing, especially if you would like your tracks to get promoted to DJs and get more in to the scene (i've experience only about trance scene, dunno if it works same way with others, too). Nowadays digital releases and sellings have been increased hugely. This has brought a lot of new digital labels because it isn't that expensive anymore to make one. The coin just has two sides, it's kinda good because the risks are lower and therefore they may be releasing a bit more clearly unique tracks, and not sticking strictly to the concept of the kind of trance which is known to sell good. But... it has also increased a lot the amount of released average and crap music, which don't really impress anyone, and they can't stand out of all other same kind of stuff.
What kind of label is good for getting the first release, then...? Of course the bigger and well known labels which are dedicated to the style of music you are making (for example anjunabeats, armind, monsteruntes etc in trance scene). But that would require really top notch track to get their attention and get your track signed. On the other hand, maybe signing tracks to a pretty new label which quite much gathers everything they can get and are going the easiest way (why not to sign these pretty ok tracks, it's easy to throw them to beatport etc for selling) isn't the best choice either. I would gather a list of the best labels, aside with average sized labels (maybe not vinyl, but at least releasing CDs) which you know to be able to provide good distributors and good promotion for your tracks.
I hope this helps something, not sure if you can get anything out of this Trying to explain these things in English while I'm drunk isn't that easy
