One remark:
How is the average trance record technically more sophisticated than the average hardcore track?
In all seriousness, there are a lot of 'simple' tracks in both genres.
Simplicity can work out fine for me btw.
BTW. How one can decide for all what constitutes music and what not... a very cold and slightly misplaced remark IMO. |
In my experience i'd say mainly becouse hardcore needs less work to sound decent, this is just about the only genre you COULD get away with skipping equilizers (it's kicks actually depended on a normal kick overdriven originally, you could of course distort them too), if you made a trance track in the same amount of time a decent hardcore track requiers, I think even you (the maker) would lough.
In no way do I think simplicity is bad, very often "Less is more", and sometimes SO MUCH more. The thing about hardcore is also that it depends on loudness, not really melodic content.

First of all, my apologies for my somewhat sour remark earlier... Bad day, etc
I see what you mean. But the vast majority of kickdrums in good hardcore tracks are more than just a loud, overdriven kick. They require a certain energetic pump to them that will need a bit more work than just that.
Hardcore does in fact rely on a certain amount of loudness, but IMO it relies much more on it's energetic, dynamic nature than just being loud.
We all know the crappy 200 BPM mayhem that some people consider to be 'real' hardcore. IMO hardcore needs to be catchy and has to have it's own 'feel'. And this goes beyond being loud or not. A simple melody or a specific rythmic effect... IMO they go better with hardcore than more complex melodies do. IMO melodic content is great, but when the pounding starts, I like it tight.
But of course, this is a personal opinion. |

linear and un interesting melodies.

though I like Braincracking from neophyte I believe it was from and Tha Playa - fuck the fame.
that last song really made HC to go a step forward in the right direction

Hehe, in my opinion braincracking by neophyte was one of the reasons I stopped listening to hardcore, that song in itself was completely horrible and totally mainstream

I never understood the genre label "Hardcore" .... Hardcore music is anything BUT hard, or core for that matter. When I think "Hardcore", I don't think of melodic music... I think of percussion.... I think of smashing, fast, destructive sounds. I think of something more along the lines of breakcore, industrial, or digital hardcore..... oh wait... a hardcore genre that IS hardcore!!!
.... ok that settles it. Digital Hardcore is the only "hardcore" genre that's even close to being hardcore... enough of this melodic oontz crap. WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING CALLING "HARDCORE" HARDCORE?@!

I like lots of hardcore music.. cant really say what's my favorite genre..
I like the most Dougal & Gammer stuff. Of course, Joey Riot is a real talent as well. Hmm.. Scott Brown was awesome when he made the tune "Elysium" years back. Not to mention "Boomstick" recently. Alot more artists. Kurt, Brisk, Vagabond, Breeze, Styles, you name them.
When it comes to gabber.. i prefer most artists I've heard. Everything that's on the Thunderdome albums.
Everything with a 4/4 beat is nice to stomp off to at a disco anyway IMO. |
