IT extention is for IMPULSE TRACKER musical module file. You can read it with its own program, the best way imho (impulse tracker, that is) or modplug tracker (depends, sometimes it fucks up).

Yup, Xmplay understands both, the original .it and modplug's butchered .it
If you want to use winamp, please grab the bass.dll plugin from Here
And PLUKS: It's not a matter of opinion.
Also, vlc plays just about everything fine, including tracked formats.

the only thing I can rely on to 100% play back IT's properly, is IT itself. modplug and XMplay both screw up...
