I think Sean Paul would be a good example of a contemporary dancehall artist.

You guys only like underground anything Anyways, I still think he's a good example since there's a great chance most people here have heard him. A bad example would have been naming someone "underground" as nobody would have heard him and they still wouldn't know what the genre might sound like. |

hmm, sure, that's a good point of view. It's easier to hear something by Sean Paul. And I must recognize that all his songs are not bad.
I just wonder: why is he so famous now ? Why do we hear Sean Paul on all the radios and on TVs nowadays ? because he just do the same thing than the others... Strange thing In some other genres (Hip Hop, Metal for example), it easy to make a musical difference between underground and commercial stuff, but not for dancehall, because there is NO MUSIC they all use the same riddim, and they all thing the same thing with the same voices (but I like it anyway) That's funny ... How to explain the success of Sean Paul ?
The poor 16 years old little girl that leaves in the same building than me (I hate her when she talks to me as if I were some of her horrible friends, the kind of "fashion victims" you see everywhere now), so this girl listens to everything commercial, like all the girls (OK, almost...) of her age. And how surprised I was when I heard some Dancehall between Britney Spears, Cool T and One T and some shitty french rap. I said "wow, now she listens at least to some good things!" (because she always listens music very very loud, and she don't like the same things than me, so... )...it was Sean Paul...
She even doesn't know it, but she made a big step on the rastafarian way to Zion, following the Allmighty Jah and Selassie !! Lol

Promotion perhaps? Big label perhaps? Anyway, we also hear Wayne Wonder on the radio. |
