This guy produces excellent music with limited gear.

That yes. Though if you say that he uses one of the best synths out there... it's logical. But yes.

Actually, I know a guy who produces music with tape loops only. I will post a link to spam soon. Very limited gear and excellent stuff.

Yes please post your links here !!!! That is why I created this thread :P

Here's the whole album. The guy produces everything just by mixing tape loops and taking bits and pieces from old records.

That is how they started making electronic music, by cutting out "loops" from wax coils.

First of all, I think this guy was good. I wouldn't say he has amazing talent, but he is a skilled producer that does a really good live performance with a minimal interface.

And yes, he really is doing it live, but since it is loop-based production, he doesn't have to play on the keys all the time. All he has to do is play the loop he needs and then make it repeat as he see fit. Most people with basic musical knowledge knows how this works.

The glasses he's wearing you can read a review about here: READ

He uses a keyboard as the interface, like many of us do, but instead of having a computerscreen to look at, he has put the computer on the floor nearby. He uses the Glasstron glasses to see what's on the screen, so in other words, even though it looks minimal it really is a normal setup for most of us.

He uses the same effects, samples, loops, plugins, vst's and so on as the rest of us. Probably through Ableton Live, Reason 3 or some other sequencer, where he has routed the knobs on his keyboard to match the sequencer interface. The result is that he doesn't need a mouse or a computer keyboard, just a piano-keyboard.

Only difference is, he can do this in a live setting, and it looks more impressing when he's just standing in front of a keyboard with a pair of fancy glasses on.

I agree with Kilon though, it was impressing, and the music was really good.

As for tyr's statement about slipknot, I can't see what an artists apperance has to do with talent? Music is a sound-experience, not a visual-experience.

And in case anyone wants to start arguing about what talent is, I'll show you: HERE

Yes, you can train to play the piano, but you can never train to feel the piano.

Ahh, but they are performers, and I was only congratulating them on the great idea of having monster masks on the stage, that way, if the mask fell of, the people would just think that it was some extra creepy mask one of them put on to amuse the audience.
And btw, when did I say there was a correlation between talent and apperance?

yea he uses ableton live on a laptop and has the display sent to the glasses, he uses a foot switch to select scenes and loops in ableton live, and uses the keyboard as a midi controler for live and also to play live lead parts etc.

aint amazing at all, pretty straightforward really.

talented guy sure, but nothing special and the tune is a bit lame if you ask me.

here is a quote from a comment by him on the page.

"I use the Glasstron like a pianist use a partition for play his song.
My live set is a little bit complicated (hand control change, play a lot of parts live, modulations, foot control change and more, loop play, play next scene, scene selection, start/stop sequence, etc.).
All that I have to do in live is displayed in the Glasstron."
