Norah Jones album: Not too late
Is well recorded and the vocal is pure and quite dynamic! I like Norah Jones for being Natural sounding! |
dammyou oZo, just when I decided to follow Lord Wallace's advice, here's another person who suggests otherwise
Bill Hicks: I was in Nashville, TN, last year. After the show, I went to a waffle house (...) and I'm alone, I'm eatin', I'm readin' a book, right? Waitress walks over to me... "Hi! Whatcha readin' for?".
Isn't that like the weirdest fucking question you've ever heard? Not what am I reading, but what'm I reading for.
Well, goddammit, ya stumped me. Why do I read? Hmm... I guess I read for a lot of reasons, and the main one is so I don't end up being a fucking waffle waitress!

Improving, but improving too far that it's actually going the wrong way again....
Imo the yahoo article + example are really really weak. Also the comments there are narrow minded and clouded with hate for the digital age or nostalgic feelings. I hate that article and its comments. Reading ddspeed's second comments here next is a way better explanation to the problem heh.
I just want to point out though, that loudness is not evil and you got to love compression. But there is always a point where something is applied too much. Seems with nowadays pop they get away with much more loudness, just for the fact that it is the fashion of todays music. Those who don't like it, myself included, are probably not listening to pop much anymore anyway. I think there is a taste thing there. Do you like quality or loudness? An artistic decision in our case or in case of pop a decision made by the majority of target audience.
imo balancing loudness and quality between your tracks and tracks you like from others, is a fun and interresting battle of improving your tracks and getting it up between the stuff you like. It is sure worth a try more then to not improve a recording by keeping it unmastered and in its original state with levels far off other productions by your own and your favorite songs from others.
Unless there is a really good reason to keep the original recording / production, I really vote for playing around with your levels and compression as much as possible until you're happy. Or maybe let a friend do it who is more into it than you, especially if you've never touched a compressor before

This thread has been very interesting and I couldn't agree more that it's becoming a headache of a problem. And I think Randor said it doesn't matter as much in dance music which I understand in part but still believe there is a limit. Like what most people are saying, everything that is "good" or "nice" has a limit. So in that sense louder doesn't equal better.
I've been mixing some happy hardcore lately and if you listen to the difference between the first Bonkers album and Bonkers 16 you will be blown away by the difference. After listening to the songs on the latter one, you really have to crank up the songs on the first (not to say that's horrible). But I've noticed this is a REALLY big pain when you're trying to mix something old with something new since it's really frickin' annoying figuring out how much you have to boost this or kill this just for the sake of the song not even really starting with any of the real mixing process.
I just wonder when this will reach a point where we (as a society) just give up (if ever).
I truly hope so...
Oh yeah, imo, one of the most important things in DJing is to excite the crowd with loud music but not to have them leave with a throbbing headache (at least so I've read ). |

OHHH definitely THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!
I hate over compressed tracks.... isnt that what the volume is for??? The thing is, commercial tracks are for casual listeners, ie. people who havent got much going on upstairs and lack taste
so how do we cash in on these people? Well, naturally, we give them no CHOICE but to listen by pumping tracks up so much the listener just needs to have a pulse to hear
I had an argument with a friend about this very topic and he was adamant about bringing things as close to 0db as possible. Cant wait to show him this thread!!!

One of my favourite albums, Your Funeral My Trial by Nick Cave and the Badseeds has little to no compression. You have to literally turn the volume on your hifi up a good extra 10 notches to hear at a normal volume!!
I personally think too much compression ruins tracks. I hate the chillies, their new stuff is shite, and Ant's singing is fucking dire. But, only on the new tracks. I find his monotonous voice gives me a headache due to lack of dynamics, and now that it's been mentioned, I think I put that down to over compression.
I like albums that go quiet, go loud, go all over the place. Its more human.
