Amazing, absolutely astonishing!
Put it this way, this is free promotion. There's no better way to get known. And once you're known and people know you and like your music, THEN you can make albums and sell them slightly more expensive than normal.
This is indeed unexpected, but brilliant in my opinion.

I have mixed feelings about it. Of course it awesome to get a Prince album cheaply with a newspaper (I won't say he gives it away for free, because it's NOT free). But I also aggree that it's another step towards devaluating records. In Poland few people ever bought a single separate DVD, because there are so many of them added to magazines. The problem with that is that it will probably reach a point in the future, when the whole business will fall. As people get more and more accustomed to the fact that movie = newspaper, retailers will stop selling movies. I don't think the DVD movie business will be able tu suffice only with licensing their stuff to magazines, so eventually they either might stop producing DVDs or cut the costs by lowering the quality of production.
Prince's case is especially scary, because he actually gave the music away before releasing the full-featured product. Usually if something is added to a magazine it's because the thing is old enough to naturally devaluate. This particular case is the opposite.
Like I said - nice to have a cool Prince's album added to a newspaper - but such practices are generally a bad thing, IMO.

I wouldn't get so far with your thoughts Denis. Actually the DVDs added to magazines are usually 4GB big, while the actual release has 9GB. Basically it means that something has to go. So you're loosing additional scenes, multi-language audio etc. Sometimes even the mpeg itself gets compressed.
Plus a good artist can always say that he doesn't want his CD or something to be released with a magazine while it's a great way to promote the oncoming artists. My 5 cents. |

Of course. BUT: people are totally happy with that. Basically it means that they don't care. People generally don't care about quality at all. Not only with movies, but also with music. The thing that counts is the price.

Sure. If the subject was "some guy added a cd with his music to a newspaper" nobody would really care. But Prince is not an oncoming artist. It's someone, who has been in the business for a long time, which means it's a totally different story.

I don't care... I dislike his music even when being for free, by other hand I think it's quite cheap to buy music nowadays as you can download a track for just a bunch of pennies!; so, that's not great at all.
Music changes hearts and minds. It goes where words cannot always get to.

Which means he has enough money not to care about the income and apart of that he has lost most of his once-held glamour if you ask me. Probably it's one of the ways to sell more copies and gather some attention. |

Of course it is. And he will get what he wants. I think though, that such practice is not good for the industry. And I do care, because it's the industry I want to work with.

The artist formally known as the artist formally known as prince is full of odd publicity stunts. And thats all it is, publicity stunt...
Personally I wonder why he would have to go to such lengths, because his music is genius.
