Yep, as long as the rip is done just by a fame-seeking geek, it's not that bad as it shows the quality of your song (and the foolishness of the ripper), but what about commercial producers who would just change the title of your song, and make $$$ out of it ?

A DJ I know, who also composes techno music, had one day one of his songs ripped, and the ripper deposed it in his country (Belgium) 's authors right company. As the original composer was not that clever to depose all his works, he was from that moment on, from the legal point of view, not the original author anymore. Even worse : if he had been playing this song, he would have had to pay royalties to the ripper !

So my advice : Take contact with your country's author's right society and depose all your works there. Then if someone rips your work and makes a commercial use out of it, you have proof you are the author and can ask your money back from the ripper.
