so i was wondering how many of the artists here are like me? people who cant read or write music, dont know the notes, cant play musical instruments, etc.
the reason why i started making music on software was because i couldnt play an instrument to save my life... (i played the drumset in school which doesnt really count)...
to give you an example of how retarded i am, my brother taught me what a chord was last year.... and i have been making 'music' since 2001....
its funny. i was making a chord, just didnt know that it had a name to it.... i just thought the notes sounded cool together. anybody else here know what i am talking about?
happy new year by the way!

I can read and write notes, but it's a fucking bitch. I'm insanely slow when it comes to it, so I'd rather read the piano roll.
The modern world is only endurable in small doses.

I've had piano since I was about four, started singing a couple years ago, and I'm currently first year at uni getting a degree in music composition. I've already had two years of theory. First semester of comp class was taught by a jazzer who composed as well, so I've got a firm grounding in jazz theory as well and can fake it at the piano decently enough. That's what got me started on writing jazz tunes when I'm not busy working on producing... It's pretty sweet, because the uni has about three jazz combos each semester and they're more than happy to play new music...
So yeah. I'm primarily a vocalist now because I seriously don't have enough time to practice piano for four hours a day, but vocalists are pretty much notorious for not being good sightreaders... all that piano helped out a good bit, but I've slacked off a little. Pretty shaky on sightreading four part harmony, but sightsinging is a piece of cake. |

If given time (lots of it) I can read and even write notes. But I don't play any instruments. I've been making music for about 10 years now, and I know some music theory, notes, chords etc. but if I was to play for example a piano, it would sound pretty awful since my hands don't work too well together
At first, when I started with trackers, I just hit different keys and when 2 notes hit a chord I jumped up and down and recorded that. Today, I just somehow know which notes (keys) work best together. I don't really think about any chords, though I know how to make Em, Cm etc the basic chords

Wow, this really suprises me. Out of curiosity, how many people just use piano roll all the time and really just ignore notes and music theory by simply using the ear and what "sounds good"? Just curious...
I've played trombone for 8 years and going on 9. I could be a lot better if I practiced more but I'm still pretty good because it seems that I have some sort of natural talent for it. I'm proud to be top chair in all the bands that I've joined. But I'm trained in Bass and Tener clef and know Treble clef enough to read and play through it slowly.
Other than that I also DJ which requires no musical reading (on paper) persay, but one thing as a producer that I've run into is figuring out a way to take melodies that are packed inside my brain and pulling them out and writing them on paper or even a piano roll. Has anyone else ever run into that problem? And how many people account for music theory when they create their music (chords and such)? I've always stressed out about this because although I'm an accomplished instrumentalist I suck at music theory for the most part (that is when it comes to the different structures of different genres). Do any of you follow chordal structures/frames or is it completely freeform?

Count me. I cannot read or write notation, although your specific mention of piano roll use, well I only use that for tidying up hand-played stuff, which is how I input most of my music. Even though I was force fed it at school in my crap music classes, I never understood it and when it came to the test of having to play an examination piece I had been learning it by ear, heh. Kinda sucked that I forgot to turn the pages when I was sitting the exam, thats how they knew.
Oh by the way, I passed out and knocked myself out on the morning of the theory exam. Not by choice, I had a blood clot. So based on coursework and the above exam, I got a C, which in terms of A-F, isn't too bad?

I can read a little bit of notation, but not fluently, and I have to read the whole score for hours just to get an incling of how it sounds.
I play lots of instruments tho
