Do you start with the chords, the bass, maybe the percussion first?
Do you always begin with the intro and end with the outro... or do you write the
chorus first?
Maybe you start with the melody.. and then cycle through all your samples until
you find something you like... or do you have it all planned out from the start.

I start with a dream atleast with a few of my songs...
but mostly you need to feel like you HAVE to write a song or you'll burst for what ever reason.. saddness, anger, ect... then atleast I start with the most emotional part and then write the denumant then the end then the start. Again thats only on a few tracks I don't have any set pattern of how to write for the majory of my tracks it starts with a simple melody and I eventually evolve it into a whole orcestrated peice.
I dunno man u just gotta find out about yourself, learn less of others once you know yourself you music will know you too.
I know that sound strange but its true. |

I start with what simply appears first... sometimes it is an idea, mood, to which I try to choose the right sounds, melodies etc. Sometimes it's a melody and chords made up by playing the keyboard - I especially like the way since it's the most spontanous one.
I also often start with making a rhythm, then I just add things, and when it's starting to gain some shape, I get ideas what it should become.
As for structure, I sometimes make songs just like they eventually progress: first intro, then build-up, and while composing the notes I got ideas what can come next, just like here and now, when I'm writing this post. Sometimes I start with the main theme though, or with any part in the middle.
But I do best when I have a clear idea in my head, what the song should be about. Each song has an accompanying vision, mood, feeling or story in my mind, the more clear it is, the easier composing is for me. |

I usually start with a simple riff. It may be a short string melody or maybe even the main lead. Sometimes I just make a simple drumpattern with a very simple bassline and start improvising, playing along. After I have a short rhythm pattern with a simple background, I start to create the soundscape and melodies. Maybe someday the song might be finished too
And yes, usually the best things I manage to compose, is made during a hangover... |

i always start with a melodie, i just play around a bit until i make something satisfayin, in some cases i actualy try to write a melodie with piano and then replace it with sysnths, dont know why actualy but i guess it is easier to build up chords with piano.
After i have melodie i got and add basslines and drums and when i have most of stuff done i start working on strocture. |

I take wotever inspires/d me at that moment..
And that can be ANYTHING..
Take that feeling and express it with sound..
Y'know.. just mix and twist something till you feel.. "hmmm, comes close enough"
I take that sample or short track and play with it..
There, I get the ideas for the actual track.. a basis from which something
will grow..

It may be different from song to song, but mostly it begins with the musical part; Melodies and chords. When I finally is satisfied enough with something about that, I get motivated to continue. One of the harder parts is to invent a really good melody, but the hardest part is to make one single melody into a whole song - you actually need to make the melody longer and/or invent more melodies, which are on the same level of quality. Actually I have A LOT of themes laying around on the HD, but because I don't know how to continue them - they're not worth much I think.
Making up more melodies in the background isn't hard, you just use the same notes as the before-invented chords of yours. The beat is about the most simple part I think, but that depends of how simple you want it to be. The structure, which also isn't so easy, is about the last thing... Actually it depends from song to song, but mostly this is the last thing I struggle with, when I have edited all other parts.
But I agree with AlphaHelix, when you make YOUR songs you need "YOUR way" |
