I think this idea is awesome! I know tons of people who could use a service like this! The only thing I can recommend is to be very careful about who designs the website. Poorly designed websites are way too common within the erm.... post-scene? Something that looks less designed by a programmer (ctg, traxinspace), someone who are into design.

Inspirational:
list of 38 beautiful designs
slide show with 400 designs

Although I don't even think all of those look good, and that most of them wouldn't fit at all for a site like this, I still think it's no surprise that I've never been able to find one of 'our' sites on a list like this.

Edit: Oh, just I realized that the site is up! I like that it's so minimal. However, on the song list, the song info for each song is split up into a minimum of 17 separate boxes, making the page feel extremely cluttered and straggling. Do they all really need borders? One of the main keys to a clean design is to have as few of those as possible, and only 'frame' things that are completely separate.

This might be a bit nasty (I take back linking to it in that case), but #8 at this page.

One thing that would be really cool on a site like this is a feature where people could commission music of a certain type. They could post something like "i want a piece of post industrial laid back heavy metal and am willing to pay 10 dollars for it. Deadline next Friday (3/21/08)" Then artists could view this commission and fulfill it. If multiple artists tried to take a commission the developer could chose the one that he liked the best (or there could be a system where an artist could take the commission exclusively)

Anyway, this would be more work, but would be an amazingly cool feature.

That's great! Be sure to give the link to them. ;)

Well, I want to present search-results quickly and easy to the game-developers. That means I have to show as much info as possible, including the direct link to a preview. At the same time the page shouldn't be too long, so I have to write this info vertically. I need something to separate each attribute I think, if not borders, then what?

You're not the first to suggest this.

But what I have in mind is, that the game-developer simply fills out the search form:

Select "Post-industrial" in the genre box
Select "Laid-back" + "Heavy" in the mood box
Input 10 in the "Maximum price" field
Click Search

When IGM has built up a library, such a simple search should give results. Maybe not something he likes 100%, but then he can contact the author (who has marked in his profile that he's available for project work) about doing something similar.

But this suggestion is in my notes, so it might appear eventually. It just has a low priority at the moment. :)

Text can be separated on it's own. And although borders can sometimes be useful, putting each attribute within it's own border is just a typical "programmer, not designer" mistake. If every attribute always had to contain borders, Windows would look like this (actually, that's a horrible example, but it should prove my point).

Can't you at least consider making it look something like this instead? Note that I kept more borders in this example than I would really have wanted to, but I kept those which do provide some kind of function. The attributes are as easy to separate as before, and are easier to spot as there's less distraction.

...feels far less straggling than:

I think you're adding them out of habit. Have you considered how many of those borders that you really need?

Sorry Nifflas but I will have to disagree , I prefer the one with the borders. It makes more sense and is easier to the eye.

No matter which option you go for (keeping or removing borders) don't mainly listen to us regulars at ctg. Keep in mind how the post-tracking scene websites like ctg or tis actually looks - it have never been our strength (exceptions exists of course), and although design is fashion and comes and goes just as musical genres, a tune that's false will remain false throughout all centuries, which I think applies to design too. Ask someone who have actually studied design about the border thing (not someone who's only a computer nerd and have figured out graphics on his own without any frame of reference), I'm pretty sure which answer you'll get though.

heh, you make it sound like I'm not listening. I am in fact asking for your opinion, and I like your suggestion.
I've tried changing it a bit, now looking like this:
Clicky

How's that?

I'd like to keep the whole project an indie-to-indie concept, so your advice is sufficient to me.

Sorry 'bout that, although I didn't phrase it like that, my last post was directed towards kilon, not you... I was just being a bit upset about acknowledged design rules being questioned. Actually, I have no good excuse. Sorry!

That's definitely a great improvement in my opinion! It's really starting to look great! Sorry about having been too harsh.
