Im getting ready to buy a MacBook Pro.

From a music production standpoint, do you think I should pay the extra $250 to upgrade the processor from 2.5GHz to 2.6GHz?

They are also giving me the option to upgrade the memory from 2GB to 4GB for an extra $400.

I am new to music production but plan on getting very serious over the next couple years. I need something to hold me over for the next 2 years or so while I get my feet wet.

The computer costs $2800 without the upgrades. Are they worth it? Am I buying a good computer to get started on? I plan on progressing very rapidly as I have lots of time to spend. I dont want to have to buy I better computer a year from now once I have learned more. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I'm not familar so much with Macs, but $250 for an extra 100mhz, is simply outrageous. I would get the 2.5ghz.

In fact, I just recently got a quad core Phenom, and couldn't justify the $50 between the 9500 and 9600 models... again 100mhz difference. I got the cheaper 9500 :)

EDIT: Almost forgot... a friend of mine bought a Mac from Apple direct, and to upgrade for 2gb to 4gb, they wanted $768 CAD. He didn't pay the different, and instead waited for the mac to arrive, to find it had 2x 1gb kingston laptop DDR2. So, the upgrade cost him not much more than $150 in the end. Apple are screwing people over.

Thanks!

Do you think paying $400 to upgrade RAM from 2GB to 4GB is worth it?

I paid $90 total after rebate for 4 gb of brand name PC6400 Ram. My Athlon 2800+ cost $90 which is dual core 2.8 Ghz.

The amounts you're paying here sound really shady...

Both items came from NewEgg.

I just realized you're getting a MacBook. I guess prices are a little different there, but I would get the lesser Processor. As for the Ram compare how much it would cost to buy Ram after you purchase the computer. Replacing Ram on a laptop is relatively easy.

From my understanding the Phenom range isn't even close to any of the core2quad processors and yet it costs more. Why dit you go with Athlon, they're really out of the ballgame at the moment as far as I'm concerned.

sorry for the off topic.

The 9500 chip was $100 less than the Q6600 Core2Quad, and I have an AM2 platform already. The performance isn't as big a gulf as suggested though, according to Tom's Hardware. Overall, the Phenom *is* a dissapointment - I was looking to cut corners, now I'm about to buy a $230 board for the Phenom anyway, to rid myself of the bottleneck.....

I did choose wrong going with the Phenom - but you win some, you lose some... Look at all those people who spent more on P4's, when the Athlon XP was cheaper and superior

Once I have this new board today though, I'll be doing ok :)

The thing that bites my ass though, is, had I waited, I could have had the Core2Quad q6600, and a half decent motherboard..... for the same price as its costing me to have a half decent CPU, with a top notch motherboard (Asus M3A32-MVP DELUXE WIFI I'll have today)....

Infact (as I add even more to my already posted post!!) - Let this be a lesson to ANYONE with an AM2 motherboard - DONT UPGRADE TO THE PHENOM. It will run like turd on an AM2 board, it NEEDS AM2+. So, change to an Intel Platform instead!!!!

Thanks for the insight. Too bad it turned out like it did... Oh well, any upgrade is for the best isn't it :)
