Hello,

I'm starting this as I noticed some of Producers reviews, now he hasn't reviewd any of mine (slightly thankful) but if he wishes to tear apart the music I write hopefully for other ppls enjoyment and not really for general release (I dont think I've hit that standard yet) then so be it.

I have however been slightly annoyed with his treatment of other peoples music and I wonder why for SUCH an experienced talent scout he is a) wasting his time writing reviews on music that doesn't hit his 'mark' and b) why is he scouting CTG for talent? Surely he should be too busy wading through piles of tapes, cds, mp3s and urls to music to bother downloading music which as far as his reviews are concerned are repeatedly below par?

IF I was a talent scout and I didn't like a tune, I'd simply move on to the next one - if I heard something I liked but which may need improving then maybe it would be worth contacting the artist or writing a review but to consistently complain about aweful synths drowning out the track, bad eq or mastering, or (a fave of mine) complaining about the volume for an ambient track (surely thats controlled by the user, if its too loud then turn it down??) as far as I'm aware all tracks are recorded as close to 0dB in order to minimalise noise regardless of the genre?

Regarding bad EQ/mastering, again a talent scout would realise this is something that can be sorted out in the studio if they decided to make it into a pro track with a pro engineer and isn't really that much of an issue at this stage as long as you have ideas for good music.

(does a writer pro publish a book themselves and THEN send it to a publisher or do they send them a manuscript first?) Its about getting the ideas down first.

I dont feel that he realises that alot of these productions are made at home on what ever equipment is available be it a tracker, a software studio, some synths etc & with some exceptions I doubt much of it is made on a 24track digital studio mixer, endless synths and effects with 500w of 15in farfield moitors and an engineer on hand!!!

He stated that his professionalism or experience is not under review but I feel that it will be if he can't weigh up the good aspects in a track vs the poor ones. Its certainly under review in my eyes and I'll be asking for evidence of chart topping success soon....!! :P

I dont often say much but this has been niggling me for a few days now!

Cheers
Mash

They still haven't found a cure for "crazy" yet, nor for "asshole."

The whole "Producer/Talent-Scout" shtick may or may not be true, but what's obvious is that he's a very bitter individual. He clearly feels both called and qualified to judge the music on this site, most of which was probably written for an audience of amateurs listening alone on headphones. And he judges according to the sole criterion of how well each tune would fare in the pop / mainstream / commercial market. His ratings just reflect how most CTG'ers would stand up when matched side-by-side with established artists with a whole team of producers and audio engineers and massive corporate budgets.

Sure his reviews are rude and the very premise on which they are based is unfair and probably unnecessary. But when someone says "you all suck compared to the people who are actually making money at this," you certainly can't call them a liar. I find his ratings unfortunate, but not particularly inaccurate.
Music ruined my life. Well, that and all the booze and drugs and sex and videogames, but the music certainly didn't help.

Even though I understand that there is some ire concerning this individual, posting a topic in his dishonor is just low. If you have a problem with his reviews, report them and if you hate him really much, send him a PM. But for fucks sake don't WHINE like a little pansy crybaby on the forums in a specialized thread about it!

John's right again.

I personally don't know enough about this to get involved, so I'm going to go look through some reviews now.

While I agree that it's a bit rash to go and post a topic like this in a public place, I feel that something should be done concerning it all. It seems that nobody is spared his harsh criticism, for even barely-talented members such as myself get these reviews from hell. I feel personally offended by the review he left me during which he called my work "without creativity or inspiration."

Further than that, I thought the main purpose of this site was for musicians to share their work with other musicians and see what they thought. But Producer has no music of his own up, and therefore can't be held to that standard. Even if I were in a pleasant mood, the fact that this guy can come in and right 16+ tragic reviews without submitting one piece of his own bothers me, particularly so because of his apparent "Professional" status.

Perhaps I'm just angry, and perhaps nothing can be done about it. But if something can, you'd get no complaints from me.

And for the record, I'm not mad because I got a bad review. I've gotten one before and took it at face value. But this review gave absolutely no constructive criticism and (I feel) attacked me personally. And that's not something I feel inclined to tolerate.

Feel the music in the step...

Lets look at it this way - If Simon Cowell told you your music was the worst thing he ever heard, would you be pleased or upset?

Personally, i'd be bloody thankful he hated it!!!!

Lol some interesting points!

Nepsus I can both agree and disagree with your points, I agree in that once I've reviewed a track I very rarely return to it, in a folder of 179 dowloaded CTG tracks I can only think of about 5-6 that I would return to, even though they are all good tunes. So yeah that may say something about the quality of tunes we make/download.

But I disagree in that saying we all suck compared to the people making money at this. Theres a lot of chart/financial success that sucks compared to some of the artists on here!! (In my opinion!)

Jon Marvin/Partysan, I'm not here to start personal slanging matches (yeah that may sound hypocritical I know), I'm merely after other peoples opinions as I feel that to consistenly rubbish peoples music is not what we are about, its about giving constructive advice to other musicians, which is something I always try to do.
Calling me a pansy crybaby or critisizing my use of english or abreveations (I could only find 'ppl' and 'pro') isn't really constructive.
This isn't a complaint, more an interest in other peoples views, if you disagree then fair enough, Nepsus happily disagreed but he managed to word it with out personal insults in my direction.

Korobase has raised valid points that mirror my own, its a community, about sharing, be they musical tips or personal views. I have no problem with bad reviews, I was disappointed to get a 5 for one of my tracks however I also received some very good advice from that particular reviewer which I tried to incorporate into my next track. That I feel is what we are about, NOT repeatedly abusing peoples music and also for no particular reason.

mrsix - Simon Cowells view is not something I would pay much attention too to be honest. I dont write commercial pop so he'd never be interested in my music. I'd understand completely if he hated my stuff.

Maybe starting a thread was a little harsh, it was only to gather other peoples views on the subject, emailing Producer wouldn't have acheived that, I'd have only got his opinion which I read on a comments thread.

Regards
Mash

as far as i can see Producer has made his points clear in his reviews. one can argue whether he was way too harsh or not but i think a bad input about your work is still better than no input. and you also know what things can't be helped either because of lack of time or lack of equipment or difference in reviewer's and composer's point of view, etc.

the ansewer to "what is this whole community about" to me is people sharing their music and their thoughts about music. i don't think that it's neccessary to share both - but i do think it's nice to know what your reviewer is capable of when going through his or her lines. however, some reviewer-only members of ctg were amongst the most constructive ones (Atlantis just to name one) so i really see no problem with him not posting his stuff.

I think I agree with Horizon.... personally I would not think too much if Producer he gave one of my songs a 4 or 5, I would be a bit miffed but to be honest it wouldnt mean anything becaue as far as i'm concerned, the person reviewing has no solid viewpoint on the music I make and should not be the one to judge it (hence my Simon Cowell post... if Simon Cowell told me my music was rubbish, i'd laugh, cos I know the guy knows nothing about music).

Thats not to say im saying this Producer guy knows nothing about music, he probably does.... but he hasn't posted anything he's done to give me an idea of how skilled he is.... were he to give some good critisism and examples of how one can improve, then fine.... i not.....then....bugger off basically

Let us listen to Producer.
Let us learn from him.
He may not be right all the time, but music is art, and art is subjective.
Therefore anyones reviews are subjective, that is they rely on assumptions, and are manipulated by personal bias.

Sorry, I have never released a song. (working on it)
but stop complaining and use this constructive criticism to your advantage.

That is all.

PRODUCER, YOUR FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED :)

Thank you.
Lazy music is everywhere.
