Hi all!
It's becoming increasingly apparent that community activity is drying up, and there are many theories as to why this has happened... such as 'site being stale because there is no change' etc...
However, the only people with the real answers are our members. SO....
If you used to be highly active, why did you cease your activities?
If you're generally just not very social here, why not?
and finally...
How can we fix it as a community?

I generally look in at the forums every day. Unfortunately there isn't much discussion here for me to take part in. I generally review 3-5 songs whenever I release one, but that has slowed down sense I have been more focused on learning and on trying to polish my music than releasing lots of stuff at a noobish level. I try to be active, but it will be easier when I stop being a noob.
and finally...
I don't know how we can fix the community. Maybe we just need to advertise it some, recruit some folks. I think one of the worst things about this community is the small size. (and the amount of people who just release music here and don't write reviews and post in the forums)
just my $0.02

P.S. If anyone could review my latest piece that would be great. It is MUCH better than the last one, I promise
Yay for noobness! |

No interesting content, little technical/musical knowledge available. CTG doesn't help me acquire the knowledge I am seeking.
How to fix it?
Probably by accepting it and either totally re-design/re-think the entire concept and website or take it down.

I'm not exactly social in the first place
A community feeds off itself. If there is a lack of new people coming into a community it will eventually die off. Advertising the community will only work if there is some gain to it. Once a community is dying off its extremely hard to revive it because no one sees any point in joining a dead community. If you want activity, you have to create it yourself.
Of course, we all still remember the CTG theme competition. I did compose a short idea, but I was convinced that some other person would come up with something better then I could so I just didn't really put much thought into it. There wasn't much to be won, either. One way this could have been prevented was with a running count of how many entries had been submitted.
I personally think that one of the best ways to keep a community active is its administration. The admins should be the ones generating the basic activity, which then feeds the rest of the activity for the site. You have the admins, the enthusiastic members, the really talented submitters who every else looks up to, the people attempting to reach them, the fanboys, and an assorted mix of other people. We are currently missing almost all of those aspects.
The fact that the top 100 charts don't really mean anything? Not good. Also, there probably needs to be far more exposure for incoming songs and top songs on the front page in terms of site design. There was a discussion about ratings and reviews and whatnot, and nothing really came of it. Perhaps its worth taking another look at.
Either way, I'm still here. |

If you click on "About Us" you can read the following:
"Our goal is to provide advanced systems for experienced and beginner musicians to promote themselves, their music in the site and as being part of the community, listen and review other artists, share or gain knowledge, chat and discuss issues with others, in a friendly environment."
That's a nice goal, but how do we get there? I don't think CTG needs to promote itself, it needs to promote the artists. That way the artists will get here. |

for the first question, why I left: it was a combination of two factors, one being that I had gotten slammed for the xth time for giving somebody a "low score" on their track and I was tired of the whole damned community.. and second factor, old TiS was reactivated and I joined there instead and had a ball with some old friends that came out of the woodwork.
Secondly: lately I've been quite social here as I've noticed that TiS leaves much to be desired, mainly in terms of site stagnation and get this.. the lack of a balanced review system! (not to mention that I've been slammed over there for writing simple comments too.. )
So, I'm here .. and I'm sort of being active, and who knows.. I might even a review a song or two here, first on my list will be something from Kinetik, IF this happens. I'm not sure I should begin reviewing again, i'm in a dilemma now :/
What CTG can do is to just bring on a new facelift, make some miniscule optimizations and implement and maintain GOOD MODERATION. (yes, fuck me.. I'M suggesting moderation, fuckety fuck me ! )

I watch my page view counters and song downloads. Over the last year I only got 8 downloads and around 30 page views in all my songs, so why have them here? Either they're hard to find or the genre is not common or there are not enough people to care.
...so I took them away. What a loss...
I'm here because I've been here too long, and like to have something to read on the forums when I'm bored.
But still, the community doesn't make me feel home, it feels like spraying a graffiti message on a wall, and watch someone spray an answer on the following day, which can be read. There's no personal connection between members, nor do I feel like establishing some, at least not in the CTG context.
Outside CTG, I'm in touch with many active members, but we chat about anything but CTG.
I guess I just lost the fascination about this site... I once took a lot of time to seek good music here, but it's NOT as easy as it could be. You have to go to the music page, choose a genre, click many times through the pages or the sorting links, click on the link to go to the song page, click on the download link, click on the alternative link if the original link doesnt work, be angry if the link is DEAD, click on back and repeat everything... and all that just to try to find a song that I might like. If you want to reorganize anything in CTG, then make the entire MUSIC section more user friendly, offer song, playlist and album streams as often as possible, and try to promote the album feature a bit more. If people listen to the song for a few seconds, it's more easy to classify if they like it or not, and if they like it, they have the ability to download the song. That would make things much more interesting here, and as a consecuence, CTG goes away from being a place to read something when I'm bored to a place where I seek good music to listen and.... review!
As it is now, I won't likely review anything...
I hope that this gives a general idea of why this page is not as successfull as it could be. |
