EMU made the VX (somewhat reduced) version if it's Proteus sampler free and soundcard-unrestricted, meaning that you don't have to own an EMU sound card to run it. also, they provide the Composer's sound bank for it too, grab it here

I have E-Mu card and Proteus VX for it. Have to say I dont like the sound of it...

yes, same here about the basic soundbanks, they need some post-processing - maybe too much of it and personally i'm not a big fan of the Proteus/EmulatorX interface. but there are some nice third party libraries out there for it and if someone is looking for samplers it's worth a try - imho :)
