I don't see the relevance in those "lies". The one thing this site is right about is that Bowling for Columbine isn't really a documentary. It's pure propaganda. Michael Moore sees no problem with ridiculing his "opposition" and spicing the facts a litte. So what?
I don't care if he ridicules his opposition. The fact is that he lies to make his points.
Once again the point is missed. Apparantly that particular Lockheed factory doesn't make rockets for weapongs used for mass destruction, but it's a fact that Lockheed DOES produce those products, and that's what people associate the company with. If someone asks you "what does Lockheed produce?". Will your first answer be "rockets for launching satellites" or would Hellfire missiles and the F117-A come to mind?
Yes, you're right. But in the film, Moore suggested that the fact that this Lockheed factory was in the city and that they moved this rocket through the streets had influenced the killers of Columbine. He even says to the guy from Lockheed "don't your sons think 'my dad makes missiles that kill peope'". And actually, the guy doesn't.
As for Charlton Heston, sure it was an ugly trick Michael Moore pulled, but it's still a fact that he is a spokesperson for NRA and that they propagates the "right to own a gun" even though guns obviously kill people.
Yes, Charlton Heston was a spokesoerson for the NRA. Still, he didn't say what moore shows he's saying and about the issues Moore says he's talking about. Moore uses smart cinematographic tricks to make the viewer think that Charlton Heston is an asshole that like to make NRA rallies precisely in the places where gun tragedies happen and few moments after those tragedies. And that's a lie, since the NRA actually cancelled the rallies.
And I don't see how people being shot in Brazil (or even more so Colombia) can justify that people get shot in the USA. (On a sidenote, I once got robbed in Brazil, and they used a knife.)
I'm not saying this is a justification. I'm just saying Michael Moore exagerates, saying that the situation in the USA is much worse than in the rest of the world when it isn't. And he criticizes the media for scaring people by showing only crimes in the news. Well, isn't he doing exactly the same as those news with his movie?
So your argument is that it's not just that guns are available that's the problem, it's also the history. Then you compare with Germany and Canada. So what if it's a combination of availability and history, you can't really change history can you? That leaves availability.
No, that's not my argument. I was just trying to show how Moore's reasoning while discussing with Heston was not logic. Yes, that leaves availability, although I actually don't think history has anything to do with it.
As for NRA and KKK, it's a bit stretching it to say they're the same. I don't think it matters much today who started KKK and NRA 130 years ago. I doubt that the reason for NRA is for the army to get better marksmen nowadays anyway. Obviously the vast majority of NRA members aren't members of KKK, but I think the opposite might be rather true.
Well, I won't say there isn't any guy from the KKK who is in the NRA, but I'm sure that there wasn't in 1871, since they were enemies. The NRA was founded by unionists. And I agree that's not important. But still, Michael Moore tried to attack NRA's prestige with a dirty lie. So, he uses lies to makes his points. How can you trust him?
Still, the main point of the movie is to provoke people to think, and to make a point. It really succeeds in that area, and I admire Michael Moore for that.
There are lots of people capable of making people think without lies. Moore is dishonest. I don't think he's fit to be admired.
And Szartd, those topics are not pointless. They're important. Anyway, what's the General forum for if we can't talk about what we're interested.
