Imho it doesn't matter what you use as long as you know how to use it, cheers |

I agree with tyr on this one, it really doesn't matter what you use for music production or mixing as the end results will depend solely on your skill with the program that you're using. If you suck at using the program, it'll reflect on your music as well.
Hell, I spent my first eight years using only one application (fasttracker II) because I didn't really feel comfortable with any of the alternatives out there at the time.
So, to summarize: use what *you* feel works best for you and flip the bird to anyone that says that program XYZ is the best.

I use 100% hardware now.
I use my YAMAHA MOTIF ES6 .
I used Ableton live in the past, but I do not like mouse when I am making muisc , so hardware was the way to go.
I disagree that tools do not matter. Actually they matter alot. If they did not , pro musicians would not spent 1000s of dollars / euros to buy them. The better the tools , the better the music you make. But of course it will still largely depend on your knowledge on music and composition as well.

| The problem is that people start arguing over whether FL 8 is better then Reason 4, and it usually devolves into fanboy nonsense. |

Let me put it this way, a blind unexperienced painter will still make bad pictures with the best brush in the world, just like a deaf new to production artist would.
Tools are like that, learn everything about them if you want to maximize your potential with that particular tool.... but when music art is concerned it's mostly about practice.

Yeah it is sad, that people spent more time talking about them than just using them. Obviously the subject is a lot more complex than a simple "Reason is better than FL cause FL sequencer is crap" . In the end you cannot discuss tools without discussing workflow. And workflow is hugely important.
Obviously we are spoiled with choice, there are tools for just about anything. Choosing the right one is not going to decide the difference between bad and good music but will play a substantial role on how fast and accurately we can achieve our goals. After all excellence is in the details.
