After reading a number of posts here at the CTG forum, I realized that there's a lot of flaming going on.. and that people generally argue over nothing. Have you ever heard of the expression: "Arguing over the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics.."?

Well, it goes a like this:
"Arguing over the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics.. Even if you win, you're still retarded!" And yes, it is true in all it's meaning.

Most of the artists here at CTG are like 10 years younger than me, and relatively 'fresh' on the scene.. and that's why I find it so hard to understand all the bitchin' in the forums. You 'new' people should seriously treat your fellow musicians with more respect, regardless of age.. and if not for them, then do it for yourself. You have to remember, sometimes rumours proceed you.. Do you really want to be remembered by other musicians as the whining, little brat from the forums, always having a big mouth and nothing productive to say?

Online or offline, you still have to earn the respect of others..

I'm not trying to be the 'grown-up' here.. but I really dislike the flaming and use of profanities in this community. If you cannot express yourself without using sentences like: "Kiss my ass, shut the fuck up, eat me.." and so on, I suggest you don't express yourself at all.

After all, most of us don't even know eachother in real life, and never will.. so stop being a baby about it. When people threaten or verbaly abuse someone over the net, I get really.. really disappointed in human intelligence.

Do everyone a favour.. the next time you decide to post in the forums, think before you reach for your keyboard.

Thank you.

for someone being 10 years older than the average CTG'er, you don't seem to know much about how things work. You claim that 'your rumour proceeds you', when this cannot be further from the truth. In real life, this would be correct. But as someone stated in another topic, "Changing you nickname is easier than making toast." So if you burn your reputation on an online community, just make another account, and get a new nickname and hopefully a new attitude to go along with it. I can't understand how you can believe that you reputation proceeds you on the internet.

Yes, cursing and flaming could be toned down. But you have to remember that most artist are passionate people who express themselves passionately, and artists on CTG are often young, angry teenagers pouring their heart and music to often harsh criticism. This will invoke strong feelings. You can't expect everyone to be nice and calm. Secondly, the amount of flaming on this forum is nothing compared to the average internet forum. Yes, people let out their frustrations on the internet because many are unable to do so in real life, and if you can't deal with it: tough luck.

Allthough you refute it in your post, I can't shake my impression that you try to come off as the well balanced adult with the grown up attitude giving the young ones advice.

I also think that you should post more yourself on this forum before telling people how to act.

You make some very strong points on the subject, so I will reply as productivly as I can:

1. When I am reffering to rumours proceeding you online, I am talking to the people who intend to use their current artist-name for a long period of time.. maybe forever. Usually, the people who change artist-names frequently are the same kind of people that ripp songs and flame on forums.. but this I can only imply from personal experience.

2. Wheter or not I can deal with the fact that people need to flame, is my own business.. but I appreciate your concern. I guess some people just feel the need to curse and swear when they get angry. I've been making music for 10 years, and I feel at least as strongly and pationately about my music as everyone else.. but I still do not feel the urge to trow out profanities. I don't see the point.. just like I didn't see the point when I was 14. And I live for music..

3. I really hope that I come off as an adult, because that is what being 23 is. At least according to Norwegian Law.. and American.. well, 97% of the world, actually. Besides, there's a difference between being a balanced person, and trying to come off as one.. In addition, I think young people should respect their elders.. and I also think older and/or more experienced people have a duty to help the young and new with advice and experience.. But of course, this is just my personal opinion.

4. I would never tell people to do anything.. I only advice and suggest. Besides, I thought trying to keep the CTG-community better than the other communities was a welcome thought.. but I might have been mistaken.

All in all, I think this post will do good. And I also think people in general will agree. Learning to explain your problem, instead of flaming about it, can be a valuable lesson.

After all, a persons thoughts are only as good as his words.

Please just explain why you don't use your real nick name here then? Are you afraid what others will say against your post? But you said it was so easy to just change nickname..... or maybe you are not a member of this site? if this is the case why did you care in the first place?

Why compare the forum on this site with other? Shouldn't we stroggle to make it the best forum? I can't see how anyone can feel better about cursing at eatchother in a freakin forum? What does that help? hehe, I can see infrong of me, a angry person sitting in front of the computer really really upset screaming and cursing and writes on a little keyboard using 1 finger on eatch hand :D If monty python still was active today this would suit their show perfect... It's just internet, how can you get so upset over 1's and 0's :) Sorry, but I don't get it. And you can all hate me for it...

hmm, maybe cause advise is what is needed?

Maybe one of the reasons is that it's not as fun to post in a forum when everything turns into a fight...

And yes, I probably have 100 :)

I agree, Ethelion. The point of being aggressive teenage is to learn how to control angriness, not flood it over the net. Good to know I'm not the only one feeling that way.....a bit less grandpapa-ish now :D

1. I can count on 2 hands the artists I know about who throughout the course of their carreers only had one artist name and stuck with it. Also, even if you intend to stick with one artistname, you have the possibility to make a new one if you burn your reputation by being a prick. So the thesis about your reputation proceeding you on the internet is just crap. It proceeds you if you wish to. The internet is the haven of the anonymous.

2. You don't see the point in letting your frustrations on the internet, ok, but I gave plenty of reasons to why some people do just that. Even if you don't agree you should see my points as to why some chose this way of expressing themselves. I'm not trying to pull you down, I'm trying to help you understand why some people see the internet a fit arena to let out some steam, and put words to their frustrations.

3. Nobody cares about age. Really, people who are 14 may very well be more mature mature than a 23 yr old. And nobody cares what the legal ages are. It's irrelevant. You say there's a difference between trying to come off balanced and being balanced. So what you are saying is that you are not trying to come off balanced, but that you are balanced? That's pretty smug.

And as for 'respecting your elders'. If you like this idea, the internet is not for you. On the internet it is almost the other way around.

(Also, if you're 23, then you regard the average CTG'er as a 13 yr old? I would love to see ace putting up some statistics on the average age on CTG. I'd say it's around 17-19)

4.
Besides, I thought trying to keep the CTG-community better than the other communities was a welcome thought.. but I might have been mistaken.

This way of arguing your case is childish. Because I partly disagree with you, there is no general interest in making CTG the best online music community? By using a statement like this you take it for granted that your suggestions will make CTG better and that mine won't. Secondly, I am only one man, and carry only one mans oppinion, so I do not represent the general interest in how to make CTG better. If you wish to maintain your image as a well balanced adult you should refrain from this type of rhetorics.

I'm less against the idea of less flaming in the forums than I am of your self-righteous way of endorse it.

I think the previous posters missed my point. I also wish less flaming and trash talking, but I realise that you have to accept that there will be some no matter what. And this forum ain't too bad.

I could not resist checking database for this stats
actualy the average year of birth is a bit more then 1981
So this means average age is around 21-22 years. Well i canot ensure those data is 100% correct since some people might not enter correct age but i tried to include only serious ones into this. (1950 -->)
